According to the company, the original USA made MJ-4 bass quickly gained popularity when it was released. Now they are making this bass more accessible by releasing an overseas built version.

The G&L Tribute line started in 2003 and were introduced as a cheaper alternative to their USA built counterparts. It featured the same body shapes and designs as their US made instruments, while keeping the price point low.

The Tribute Series started out being made in South Korea by Cort Guitars, who also builds affordable models for a number of other guitar manufacturers. They have since moved the production to a Cort facility in Indonesia.

The MJ-4 is the latest US-made design to join their affordable Tribute line, carrying over the same shape and specs, as well as the innovative Bi-Coil Alnico V pickups. It starts off with a swamp ash body carved into the familiar double cuataway shape, which is available in conventional natural gloss finish or a more unique looking blueburst finish.

Contrasting the instrument’s traditional look is its modern pickup design and preamp. Here is what the company says regarding the Tribute MJ-4’s electronics:

“A G&L Alnico Bi-coil pickup looks just like a classic Alnico single-coil, but under the cover are two side-by-side coils, configured in series-humbucking mode. The new pickups are optimized for a specially tuned version of G&L’s studio-quality M-spec preamp and control system, dubbed MJ-spec. The 18v system features volume, pan and +/-14dB 3-band EQ with center detents, and is powered by twin 9v batteries housed in an easy-access compartment. With an LF442 chip, 100v poly caps, 1% metal film resistors and big, fat signal traces on the mil-spec circuit board, this preamp reveals everything the player and the instrument have to offer.

The 34″ scale neck is crafted from hard-rock maple and joins the body via bolt-on construction. The fingerboard is crafted from either Maple or Rosewood depending on the finish. It sports a more modern medium C profile, 12″ neck radius, 1.5″ nut width and it has a total of 21 medium jumbo frets.

As for the other hardware, the Tribute MJ-4 comes with the Leo Fender designed G&L Saddle Lock bridge. The other end of the strings are secured by traditional open back tuners.

The new G&L Tribute MJ-4 is designed to provide a wide range of single-coil bass tones that can go from classic jazz to modern rock styles, and it does so without the unwanted single-coil hum.

The street price for the new G&L Tribute MJ-4 is $749.99, for more information, you can visit G&L Guitars.
