Carvin DC800 8 String Guitar

Carvin used its experience with 7-string guitar building and came up with the new customizable DC800 8-string guitar.

More than just a guitar with added strings, the 8 string DC800 is redesigned from the ground up as a completely new guitar to support 8 string usage. It is designed to meet the demands of technically savvy guitar player who require the extra range an 8-string guitar provides. It has a F# – B – E – A – D – G – B – E default tuning.

The core of the DC800 is a standard alder body, which is a logical choice for most manufacturers because of its relatively lighter weight and good resonance. Alder is the default body because of its attractive grain that looks nice in the many finishes that Carvin offers for the DC800, including solid colors, translucent finishes and metallic solid finishes.

You are in no way limited to Alder bodies, advanced guitar players can select their preferred optional wood such as maple, swamp ash, mahogany, walnut and koa. If you are into premium top woods, you can pick from AAAA quilted maple, AAAA flamed maple, flamed koa, flamed spalted maple and California Claro walnut. Each of these woods brings their own tonal properties to the DC800’s total flavor.

The body is connected to a maple neck via a neck-through design. Since alder is slightly darker in color than maple, the body accentuates the maple neck of the DC800. Maple neck is the most common choice because it brings about a clear tone, you are however free to choose from other neck woods such as mahogany and koa which has their own slightly warmer tonal qualities. You can also go for a 5 piece wood combination neck for better looks and personalized tone. It comes equipped with Carvin’s dual-action, fully adjustable truss rod. The DC800 sports a new 4 X 4 pointed headstock, which adds to the aggressive looks and it features a straight string-pull design, which helps reduce string breakage.

The DC800 features a standard 27″ extended scale ebony fingerboard sprinkled with white pearl dot inlays. It has a semi-flat 20″ radius and is mounted with 24 medium-jumbo nickel frets. Like the body and neck, you can choose which type of wood you prefer for the fingerboard, from rosewood, maple, birdseye maple or flamed maple fingerboards. You can even select your preferred fret size, and inlay designs. Carvin also takes prides in its “Rapid Play” low action neck profile.

A new 8-string hardtail bridge with strings fed through the body comes standard with DC800. This is a fully adjustable bridge for detailed height and intonation adjustments, and is designed to provide sustain. The Sperzel locking tuners will ensure you will stay in tune no matter what your playing style is. You can upgrade the standard chrome hardware to black or gold.

The distinctive feature of the DC800 is Carvin’s new direct-mount A80 humbucking pickups, which produce clear mids and highs with an aggressive growl in the lower audio spectrum. Controls are simplified and consist of a master volume and passive tone control with a 3-way lever-style pickup selector. The DC800 is equipped with active electronics that provide tonal variety, suitable for a wide range of playing styles.

The DC800 is proudly built in the USA at Carvin’s Custom Shop in San Diego, California.
