Gibson brought in the Flying V as a part of it’s Modernist Series back in 1958, along with the Explorer.
Gibson wanted to get out of the standard and make a radical statement with radical shaped guitars. Now 53 years later, the Flying V is still a very impressionable, radical and popular rock guitar.
Gibson USA’s new Flying V Tremolo, equipped with Floyd Rose, takes the radical tradition of this Modernist guitar and enhanced it with new features that today’s musicians demand. The Flying V Tremolo – sports a classic design but carries modern high-output humbucking pickups coupled with an advanced vibrato tailpiece. Gibson then wraps it all up with playability, while maintaining the V shape, sci-fi looks that made Flying V a guitar legend. The final presentation is a high-gloss nitrocellulose classic white finish.
Although it has high tech parts, it still starts with Gibson’s traditional careful selection of tone woods and quality construction. It has a solid mahogany body, a solid quarter-sawn neck that is glued in, capped with a dark Obeche fingerboard. The neck profile starts att .800″ at the 1st fret and goes up to .850″ at the 12th fret, with a hybrid neck profile.
The first noticeable upgrade of the Flying V Tremolo over it’s classic counterparts is of course the addition of the Floyd Rose which is partnered with a locking nut. It also has a some of Gibsons hottest pickups, the 496R pickup in the neck position and a 500T pickup in the bridge.
This isn’t the first time Gibson have given the Flying V a makeover – earlier this year they also released a 7 String Flying V.
