Buzz Feiten Guitars

Following up on his innovative tuning system, Buzz Feiten launches five new electric guitars under his name.

Each of the five models follow a similar shape but they feature distinctive wood combinations built to Feiten’s design specifications.

The first thing to note about the new guitars is that they follow the same single cutaway shape, which is a derivative of the Telecaster shape. The five models also feature a uniform headstock, Feiten’s tuning system and all of them have their own two pickup configuration. The wood combination, finish, pickguard and pickup style are the elements where the models differ.

The new Buzz Feiten Guitars are designed to have distinct acoustic personalities by utilizing different tonewoods. Buzz was quoted saying: “each of the five models represents my experience with a particular type of guitar, and each has its own unique features that give it a personality and acoustic signature of its own”.

Each guitar features an alder wood core in combination with four different tonewoods – sugar pine, spruce, swamp ash or flame maple. Buzz further elaborated: “Each wood has a tonal identity of its own, and by using a combination of instinct and experience, I’ve been able to create a unique acoustic signature for each model, so that the Player can choose the perfect match to fit their playing style.”

To capture the tones of these guitars, Buzz Feiten designed special Alnico 5 hum-cancelling pickups. In his words: “These pickups are designed to produce a warm, vintage tone, with incredible transparency and punch.” Four of the guitars are fitted with a custom-spaced, nickel-plated top-loaded bridge that is designed to make the guitars more playable and sustain better. The bridge also gives the instruments their vintage look and feel.

The models are named to hint their individual tonalities:

  • TPro – Feiten’s tribute to the Telecaster featuring a spruce top on alder core.

  • Blues Pro – This model has an alder and flame maple top body designed for blues playing.

  • Classic Pro – A guitar for players that prefer rosewood necks, with a sugar pine top and alder body.

  • Elite Pro – Considered by Buzz as the workhorse guitar of the five, with a swamp ash top and alder body.

  • Signature Elite – This hand built instrument is the flagship model, featuring embellishments not found on the other four.

The prices range for the new guitars start at $1995 for the T-Pro and goes up to $2895 for the Signature Elite. Before becoming an inventor and luthier, Buzz Feiten was an accomplished guitar player starting out with the Butterfield Blues Band and continued on to play with many popular artists and groups. Feitenized guitars play awesome. I wondered how long it would take for Buzz to actually start making a line of these. I’d be interested to see how they sound.
