You probably know him for his eclectic roles, playing memorable characters like Edward Scissorhands, Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka and others. His successful acting career however downplayed his other passion, and that is to play guitars! He is actually a capable musician that owns an enviable collection of vintage instruments.
"Music has always been my first love," says the accomplished actor, and he doesn't just say it - he backs this up by playing with a number of big name artists including Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, The Black Keys, Alice Cooper, Oasis and many more.
Depp is said to be a fan of the German guitar manufacturer, and have purchased a number of Duesenberg guitars. This led to a collaboration that resulted in the new Johnny Depp Artist Series Guitar, which will be unveiled at the upcoming Winter NAMM Show.
Nathan Fawley of Duesenberg USA says: “In working with Johnny on this project, which took over one full year, we wanted to do something that was about Johnny on a personal level, and if there’s anything that tells Johnny’s life story, it’s his tattoos. Each one symbolizes a significant event in his life. Our goal by incorporating Johnny’s tattoo’s onto the guitars was truly to make this not only a piece of art, but a great guitar in the Duesenberg tradition. Ingo Renner and Dieter Gölsdorf (co-owners Duesenberg Hanover Germany), had the task of building and designing an iconic guitar for one of the most recognizable people in the world – with the key being to build a guitar we all would want to play - and we feel that we have done just that.”
Aside from its background story of the new signature, the manufacturer has not released much information about the guitar's specs. Thankfully, they did release images so we can at least speculate. Based on the images we can see a single pickup and a single knob for adjusting volume. It will be interesting to know what the switch below the volume knob will do - I'm guessing it would be a kill switch.
To celebrate this new collaboration, Duesenberg will be releasing the Limited Johnny Depp Signature with only 52 hand-signed guitars worldwide. A production line version is slated for release at a later date, with portions of the proceeds going to the charities that the actor prefer. For further details, head over to Duesenberg USA.
