Epiphone Les Paul Standard Quilt Top Pro

The Epiphone Les Paul Standard Quilt Top Pro offers another affordable alternative to the modern Les Paul, featuring AAA quilt maple veneer tops.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Quilt Top Pro

Just like its cousin, the Epiphone Les Paul PlusTop Pro, this guitar features ProBucker pickups with coil tapping functionality.

The same basic formula that made the original Les Paul famous still applies to this guitar. It has a solid mahogany body cut in the familiar single-cutaway shape that many players love. What makes this guitar unique though is the AAA quilt maple veneer top that gives it a unique look. To highlight the legendary shape, a single ply cream binding is applied on the top.

The 24.75″ scale neck is made of mahogany, bearing a 12″ radius and a comfortable ’60s SlimTaper D profile. The neck features a typical rosewood fretboard with pearloid trapezoid inlays, 22 medium-jumbo frets and its own 1-ply binding. As a bonus, Epiphone also gave the Quilt Top Pro guitars a 14 degree angled headstock, for even more vintage vibe. Finally the neck is glued-in for improved stability.

Just like the modern Gibson Les Paul Standards, Epiphone now features versatile humbuckers. This specific model comes with Pro-Bucker pickups that are made from Alnico II magnets, the same ones found on vintage PAF humbuckers. The bridge position Pro-Bucker pickup is slightly overwound to give it a bit of edge for lead or rhythm work. Aside from emulating the sound of original PAF pickups, the Pro-Buckers now also feature coil-tapping for modern tonal flexibility. It is controlled by a push/pull volume control knob, letting you switch your pickup sounds from humbucker to single-coils and back. Another special feature of these pickups is that they utilized a double vacuum waxing process in its assembly. This helps reduce noise and microphonic hum.

The Quilt Top Pros come with LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and a Stopbar tailpiece. This is designed by Epiphone to allow you to lock the bridge and tailpiece in place without any tools. Epiphone even mentioned that 1″ diameter potentiometers were used for improved lifespan. Finally, Grover 14:1 machine heads are installed for intonation.

The Les Paul Standard Quilt Top Pro is currently available in Faded Cherry Sunburst and Translucent Blue finishes.

Pricing information is currently unavailable, but my guess is that it should be within the Plus Top Pro range of $499.

Further details and complete specs are available from Epiphone.

  1. Its coil splitting, not coil

Its coil splitting, not coil tapping, that lets you change your sound between humbucker and single coil. It’s something a little bit different. Coil tapping will differ your sound but you will not lose humbucker characteristic.
