This guitar is built to match Dickinson’s unique playing style, and is built at Gibson’s Memphis, TN facility.
Gibson and Luther worked together to build a guitar that will meet the demands of his dynamic blues slide playing. The result was a classic sounding and looking instrument with hardware that improves its versatility.
This signature guitar starts off by being true the late ’50s era ES-335 guitars, featturing the same laminated maple semi-hollow body that has a solid maple center block and two traditional f-holes. Luther wanted his signature to have the same sunburst finish as his father’s vintage ES-175, Gibson delivered the finish to his satisfaction and labeled it as the Jim Dickinson Burst finish.
The guitar features a glued-in neck carved from solid quarter-sawn mahogany. To match the guitar’s finish, Gibson opted for a darker rosewood fretboard. Serving as bright contrasts to the fretboard are late ’50s era pearloid dot inlays. Both the neck and the body come with a vintage cream binding to further enhance the instrument’s vintage appeal.
Since Dickinson prefers the punchy tone of the P-90, he had the guitar equipped with two “dog-ear” covered P-90 pickups. Gibson describes the pickups as “accurate recreations of the originals, made with dual Alnico II magnets and Custom wound with 42 AWG wire”. The pickups are left unpotted for added character. Traditional controls include volume and tone amber top=Hat knobs for each pickups, and a 3-way Switchcraft toggle, where the pickups are hum cancelling when in the middle position.
To match the guitar’s aged look, all the hardware undergo Gibson’s VOS aging process. This includes the ABR bridge, Bigsby vibrato tailpiece, and the 15:1 ratio Kluson tuners. Other features include a traditional bell truss-rod cover and a five-ply black pickguard.
