PRS S2 Singlecut Semi-Hollow

The PRS S2 Singlecut Semi Hollow completes the company’s new trio of thinline guitars for their S2 series.

PRS S2 Singlecut Semi-Hollow

This semi-hollow guitar is based on the solidbody “Singlecut” model that became controversial because of its resemblance to Gibson’s Les Paul.

Speaking of controversy, the production of the original PRS Singlecut model was ceased in 2004 because of a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Gibson. The injunction was lifted the following year when the Court of Appeals reversed the decision of the lower court. Gibson tried to appeal until the case reached the Supreme Court, but they were denied.

The Singlecut model continues to be a part of PRS’ core guitar designs, and is now given the semi-hollow treatment as part of the 1st anniversary celebration of the company’s S2 line of guitars.

The new S2 Singlecut Semi-Hollow features traditional tonewood combination – mahogany backwood with figured maple top. It has the same single-cutaway body that looks “familiar” but has become distinctly PRS, the main difference however is the f-hole that lets you peek into the guitar’s chambered body.

The neck of the guitar is made of mahogany and is topped by a 22-fret rosewood fretboard. PRS designed this guitar to have a scale length of 25″, which sits between Gibson’s usual 24.75″ and Fender’s 25.5″. The company’s trademark Birds fretboard inlay serve as markers.

The S2 Singlecut Semi-Hollow has a set of PRS S2 #7 humbuckers. To help this dual humbucker guitar keep up with the multiple tone needs of modern players, PRS equipped it with a push/pull tone knob that lets you split the coils of the humbuckers. This gives the guitar additional single coil flavors that are easily accessible. Other controls include a 3-way pickup selector and a volume knob. Other features of the guitar include PRS stoptail and PRS S2 locking tuners.

According to the press release, “The S2 Singlecut Semi-Hollow is a classic instrument with a clear voice that balances punch and sustain. The classic control layout (with volume and tone for each pickup) and added versatility of a push/pull coil tap on the tone controls give players plenty of options to dial in flawless tone. Whether playing lead or rhythm, the S2 Singlecut Semi-Hollow is eminently recordable and always gig-ready.”

The S2 Singlecut Semi-Hollow is now available for special order with a price tag of $1,579. You can head over to PRS Guitars for further details.

i wish PRS or whoever, would make this guitar in a Strat pickup and control model. Humbuckers are nice for jazz and distorted playing, but for clean rhythm work, IMHO, they are useless. Also the 2 volume/2 tone control layout is a dinosaur that makes going from rhythm to lead a real PITA in the middle position if you want to get the same tone, just louder… Replace 1 volume with a master volume and the other volume with a pickup blend control.
