For years, solid-mahogany continues to be among the most sought after wood used on electric guitars, now the properties of this classic tonewood is highlighted by three new models from PRS.

First released in 1987, the original PRS Standard is based on Paul Reed Smith’s Pre-Factory all-mahogany instruments. Now this design is available at a relatively more affordable price via the S2 Series, and built with modern players in mind, while still retaining the vintage aesthetics and tone of mahogany wood.

Like the original, the three new S2 Standard models come with solid mahogany bodies and set mahogany necks. They are paired with S2 Series electronics and pickups.

The company elaborates, “Known for its warm, woody tone, mahogany provides the S2 Standard models with a strong fundamental that has been built on to create guitars that play as well and sound as good plugged straight into an amp or run through a modern pedalboard setup. The set neck adds to the tone of these guitars by providing remarkable resonance and lasting sustain while the addition of PRS-designed pickups and push/pull tone controls gives players access to authentic singlecoil sounds in addition to strong, punchy humbucker tones.”

The S2 Singlecut Standard suits its all-mahogany design really well, thanks to its classic single-cutaway body shape and control layout. But if you think that it’s limited to traditional two volume and two knob controls, your expectations will be exceeded by the push/pull tone knob feature. This allows for single-coil tones on top of the expected classic humbucker tones available.

The S2 Standard 24 stays true to its roots, featuring the distinct double cutaway shape and appeal that helped put PRS in the map, so to speak. This shred-friendly instrument is equipped with vintage sounding pickups, PRS S2 HFS for the bridge, and PRS S2 Vintage Bass for the neck, which gives it a distinct sonic flavor. The pickups are routed to a push/pull tone knob for convenient access to single-coil sounds.

Finally, the S2 Standard 22 is described as heading towards a more vintage direction, while still remaining as a practical instrument for modern players. It has the same scale length as the 24 fret version, but with less frets like older electric guitars. The same push/pull tone knob technology is also available with the S2 Standard 22, allowing for a wide variety of tones.

Like other S2 Series models, the three new S2 Standard feature S2 locking tuners, PRS-designed bridges, as well as PRS nuts, frets, and strings. The company concludes, “With solid build quality and versatile electronics platform, the S2 Standard lineup can effortlessly go from high gain punk and metal to low, bassy blues, making these guitars a solid choice for players who prefer a straightforward approach to a variety of different musical styles.”

The three new PRS S2 Standard guitars are now available for preorder, with a price range of $1,199 to $1,319. You can head over to PRS Guitars fot further details and for the complete specifications of the three new guitars.
