3rd Power Amplification announces Switchback 112 Cabinet

Nashville based 3rd Power Amplification, designer and manufacturer of tube guitar amplifier systems, will debut their new cabinet at Summer NAMM 2011.

Like 3rd Power’s larger 312 and 212 models, the Switchback 112 is a single 12″ cab with a triangle speaker chamber contained within a rectangle outer shell, but is 35% smaller than the 212.

The triangular port behind the speaker gives you a choice closed or open-back sound, effectively doubling the tonal possibilities of whichever amplifier the cabinet is paired with. And it sports computer tuning to extend the low frequency response.

The idea is for the light-weight 112 is to give you the kind of sonic performance usually associated with larger cabinet designs, but with a refined clarity and tone that really translates well on recordings, in the PA as well as when monitored by the artist via in-ear monitoring systems.

The concept behind the triangular design is to minimize internal reflections and their associated interactions that can result in uneven comb-filtered responses to the sound.

“Artists and studio engineers have requested that we create the Switchback 112 to better facilitate recording and live performance setups. It seems more common these days for the amplifier head and the cabinet to be in separate locations whether recording or performing live,” says 3RD Power founder and designer Jamie Scott.

He goes on to say, “We’ve had great success with our cabinets being used on major tours by players like James Richardson (MGMT), Patrick Matera (Katy Perry), Korel Tunador (The Goo Goo Dolls) and others. We’ve also had great success in the studio with major producers and engineers like Sylvia Massy, Justin Neibank, Paul Ebersold and others”.

The price for the standard Switchback 112 will be $699 with a standard ceramic magnet 12” loudspeaker, however speaker upgrade options will also be available.

It will go on public display for the first time at booth #1525 at this year’s Summer NAMM.
