Apogee Electronics have released JAM – a new A/D guitar interface for iOS devices.
Apogee are billing this as “Studio Quality”, so we should point out that it’s a 44.1 kHz / 24-bit audio to digital converter – some people consider studio quality to mean the higher sampling rate of 96 kHz.
Putting that to one side, this does look like reasonable value for $99 based upon the specs, and of course it’s perfectly timed with the launch of iPad 2 which includes Garage Band.
It’s a multipurpose A/D converter, in that it also works with your Mac computer.
The main features are:
- Designed for electric guitar and bass
- Plug and play
- Works with GarageBand on iOS devices or with any Core Audio compatible application on a Mac
- Control knob allows easy input level adjustment
- Multicolor LED for status indication and input level monitoring
- Studio quality instrument preamp with up to 40dB of gain
- High quality locking output connects directly to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch dock connector port or USB port on a Mac
- 44.1kHz, 24-bit analog-to-digital conversion
- Auto Soft Limit for optimal input level
