Kirk’s Weekly Guitar Lesson: Blues and Christmas Carols

Hi, fellow twangster … I'm back. Sorry about the long gaps, I've had my work cut out for me recently … check it out: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=92k5uht6axw

TipToe Through The Blues … I did a 'part 2' for this lesson. As you may recall, I used a well worn progression for part 1. Learn part 2, tack it on to the end of part 1, and you'll have something more substantial to work on.

I've also done three new Christmas Carols … well, two, but two versions of one of them:

God rest Ye Merry Gentlemen – Easy Version … this one is a good one if you're just getting into finger style. There's nothing too demanding, and of course you can watch the movie and read the tab to fine tune the detail.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen – Tricky Version … this one is tricky. It even took me, the guy who came up with the arrangement a good couple of hours to get all the moves to flow nicely. It's a challenge, but the counterpoint harmony line is well worth the effort.

We Wish You a Merrry Christmas … one we've all hear 7 billion times, but to my surprise was written in the 1500's, so well and truly in the Public Domain. As you know, I don't do any lessons for copyright songs anymore. This one is pretty basic, I'd call it intermediate.

So, have fun practicing these up for the Holiday Season.

Are you one of thousands of players who is still trying to figure out the trick to improvising? All you ever get in response to your questions is 'learn your scales, use the pentatonic minor', but (of course) that's of little help. You wind up trapped in little patterns and hearing ugly notes all the time. Well, there is another way. I stopped thinking about scales decades ago. I just follow something you need to know anyway: the chords. I do this because many moons ago I discovered (after much research) that melody loves chord tones. So I set about figuring out how to see those chord tones on the fretboard in a simple foolproof way. What I came up with is a way of looking at the fretboard that comes in handy for all aspects of playing guitar.

Here is a movie of me playing the blues thinking of each chord rather than trying to make one scale work: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh3orNb2n5s

Here's another of me playing to a jazzier progression, again, not once thinking or wondering about scales or modes: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=wW1ebDlvbJU

If you're interested in this approach, and how to look at the fretboard in a way that allows you see chords as fretboard-long entities, read about my book/dvd PlaneTalk – The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book. Endorsed by maestro and old frind Tommy Emmanuel, it's been helping twangers for ten years now to learn 'the trick'.

Slide Guitar in Standard and Dropped-D Tunings

If you'd like to learn how to play slide without tuning your guitar to open and unfamiliar tunings, check out the DVD I put together on just that. I like to drop that bass string down to D myself … here's a little movie of me noodling in Dropped D: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj9D5mdIKaw

That's it from me, until next time, happy twanging!
