The Crying Tone Wah received quite the acclaim when it was first released, due to its good and sound innovative zero-moving parts design. But it seems that not all guitarists are not ready to leave behind the old rack and pinion style wah design, so EHX was compelled to make a more conventional version.

While the Crying Tone Wah was indeed innovative and maintenance free, it was not without drawbacks, the most notable of which is the need for an extra product just to attach the unit to a pedalboard. It will also requires awkward poses to get the pedal into cocked wah sounds.

Now EHX has taken the circuit and sound of the Crying Tone Wah and have stuffed it into the Wailer Wah, which features familiar rack and pinion operation. But it’s not just a mere old school wah version, because Mike Matthews and hist team decided to spice things up by lowering the weight to just over 1.5 lbs, and they achieved this by utilizing a lightweight but sturdy polymer exterior. Since it’s lighter than most wah pedals, it makes for an easy addition to any pedalboard.

And with its reduced weight and the use of polymers, the company was able to substantially lower the price to make the wah pedal more accessible to more guitarists. This makes the Wailer Wah, not just a traditional version, but also an affordable version for those who want the sound of the Crying Tone pedal but are limited by their budget.

Electro-Harmonix released a demo video in time for the pedal’s release, check it out below:

After hearing the pedal in action, I have to say that it’s quite versatile, and I’m impressed with the quality of the sound. This is an interesting and impressive feat from EHX, especially when coside was able to mass produce this pedal while keeping the price low, The official product description lists the dimensions of the pedal and we list them below for your convenience:

  • Dimensions in inches: 9.92 (l) x 3.4 (w) x 3.0 (h)
  • Dimensions in mm: 252.0 (l) x 87.0 (w) x 75.25 (h)

Electro-Harmonix President Mike Matthews concludes, “Our goal was to build a wah pedal that sounds great, deliver it at an astounding low price and make it provide good weight savings for the player who has to schlep their own gear around. I am very excited about the EHX Wailer Wah.”

For the price, the new EHX Wailer Wah comes bundled with a 9V battery, but it can also be powered by an optional 9-volt AC adapter. It is currently available now from music gear retailers, with a pedal is available now with an expected U.S. retail price of $62.75. For further details, you can head over to Electro-Harmonix.
