MXR Prime Distortion Pedal

Dunlop introduces the MXR Prime Distortion, a pedal with a hard clipping tone and high sensitivity to pick attack.

MXR Prime Distortion Pedal

This pedal is produced in partnership with Guitar Center, and is exclusively available at their stores including Guitar Center Online and Musicians Friend.

This new pedal is designed to provide vintage sounding drive that clips hard as you increase your attack, and dynamically softens as you soften your attack and pull down your guitar’s volume knob.

The pedal uses low noise op amps and feature 100% analog circuitry, which gives it an analog vintage voice. Control options include basic tone, output and distortion knobs that makes it easy to dial in the amount of drive and tone shape that you prefer.

On the first video demo, a Telecaster is plugge d into the MXR Prime Distortion, showing the character of the drive and its versatility. It is nice that on the demo, they utilized various levels of distortion to show the pedal’s colors. The video also showed how the pedal reacts when the volume is pulled back, resulting in a clean tone with some clipping that gives it a gritty sound, matching the Teles naturally bright voice.

The second video pairs the pedal with a shred machine, a Jackson with EMG pickups. It shows how the pedal’s vintage voice gives off a more midrangey tone, which may not be a conventional choice for guitars with active humbuckers – but a unique tone nonetheless, probably ideal for doing solo work that will cut through a noisy band. When the volume was pulled back, the pedal again showed how it cleans up nicely.

The new MXR Prime Distortion pedal is set for release on May 22, 2013. It will come with an affordable price of $49.99.
