Source Audio Reflex Universal Expression Controller

Source Audio introduces the Reflex Universal Expression Controller, a MIDI capable and programmable expression pedal.

Source Audio Reflex Universal

This is far from your ordinary expression pedal, having the capability to send up to three standard expression or CV (control voltage) signals, MIDI continuous controller messages and six LFO wave shapes.

Utilizing their experience with their Hot Hand expression controller, Source Audio set out to build a seemingly traditional expression pedal with complex connectivity and control features built-in. The Reflex Universal Expression Controller is the result, featuring modern versatility to handle any type of guitar rigs, from the straightforward, to the most complex.

To achieve what to them is acceptable flexibility, they packed the Reflex Universal Expression Controller with a wealth of connectivity options and controls. From the get-go, you have three 1.4″ expression jacks that have dedicated DIP switches for adjusting each of their plug configurations or CV (Control Voltage) output mode. This allows the Reflex to work with any type of effects pedal with an expression input.

In addition to Control Voltage features, there is also a MIDI 5-pin DIN connector built into the pedal, which you can use for sending MIDI CC messages. This makes the Reflex compatible with a host of other MIDI capable effects and gadgets, and makes it easier for technicians to set up. There’s even a USB port which lets you utilize the pedal to control class compliant USB-MIDI devices. Both these features are quite surprising considering the compact and traditional configuration of the pedal.

Source Audio President Roger Smith says, “We have spent the last ten years studying how artists use expression pedals. About two years ago we dreamed up the concept for Reflex: the most powerful and flexible expression pedal system ever conceived. Whether you are playing guitar, bass, keyboards, or computer-based music, Reflex serves up a dramatic new world of analog and digital control possibilities.”

The company knows that complex features and connectivity will just be a complication without good and easy to use set of controls. As such they equipped the pedal with a specially designed control panel that lets you program the pedal as you prefer. You choose which outputs to activate, adjust the depth and direction of the expression signal, and you can tweak the curve of the tapers.

You can also assign one of the pedal’s six LFO wave shapes over LFO depth, speed, or beat division. And once you’ve set up the pedal, you can then save your settings into one of the 128 presets that can easily be recalled via the onboard control. Being MIDI compliant, you can also control the pedal via external MIDI program change messages.

Source Audio CTO Jesse Remignanti concludes, “The lack of a standard in expression pedals has been a source of frustration for many of our customers over the years. Our experience with Hot Hand expression control [Source Audio’s Hot Hand 3 Universal Wireless Effects Controller] has been refined over multiple product generations to the point where we’ve created a flexible and powerful approach to interfacing digital controllers with analog expression inputs. Incorporating a wide variety of options, waveforms, and direct MIDI output, REFLEX is the holy grail of expression pedals.”

The Source Audio Reflex Universal Expression Controller is expected to retail for $219. For more information, you can visit Source Audio
