Music lovers can now purchase, legally bootleg, and get paid for distributing the work of undiscovered musical artists, according to a spokesman for OrangeAlley.com, a new website developed by musicians for musicians that is offering for saledigital music in MP3 format over the Internet.

OrangeAlley.com offers independent artists a mode for both selling digital music files directly to their fans and allowing those fans to play a part in the distribution of the artist's music.

"Copying is good for artists because it helps to expand their fan base. The BootLegal system ensures that artists get paid for those copies, helping artists earn money while spreading their music", says Mark Erickson, the site's President & CEO.

Music lovers who log onto OrangeAlley.com can sample songs and albums before they buy. If they like what they hear, they can purchase a 'BootLegal License' for a single song in MP3 format for 99 cents, an entire album for $5.99. The license gives the purchaser the right to make and distribute as many copies of the music as they want. They also receive promotional materials designed to encourage more visitors to the site to preview additional music and purchase their own licenses.

A kickback is paid to each bootlegger who directs a new purchaser to the site, while new buyers receive a 10 percent discount. "The best sales people for a band are its own fans," Erickson explained. "With the BootLegal distribution system consumers have a financial incentive topromote their favorite artists. Our form of copyright protection is based on positive incentives, which encourage bootleggers and consumers, acting in their own self-interest, to pay the copyright owner," he added.
