GUITAR PLAYERS WHO SING By Robert Lee Johnson There are a few Guitar Players who are great singers too. Their Singing and Guitar Playing usually match perfectly. A list of those Guitar Players who sing, that I like, and consider great Guitar Players: Jerry Reed I'm sure there are many more Great Guitar players that are good singers, but I shall address these five great artists: Jerry Reed has some Guitar Licks that are out of sight and his singing gives him a chance to play those great licks. Of course Jerry Reed is a fine solo Guitar Instrumentalist also. And Jerry did much studio work backing up the most popular Country Music Stars, including Elvis. Needless to say, Jerry Reed is one of the most creative song writers of all time. Doc Watson is one of the Greatest of Guitar Players, and his singing of old time Country Songs is unsurpassed. There is no better Guitar player than Doc Watson when it comes to the old time country songs, bluegrass and about any other kind of music you want to name. Doc is one of the most versatile Guitar players that exist. Though Merle Travis is best known as a Guitar Player he had many top 10 hits in the middle 40s. He wrote many songs that became hits for other singers. Naturally the Guitar work of Merle Travis complimented his singing perfectly. Well what can you say about Eric Clapton except that he is one of the all time Great Guitar Players and Singers. His Guitar playing and vocals fit perfectly. Eric Clapton is a legend in his own time. Stevie Ray Vaughan was one of the Blues Greats on both Guitar and vocals. Though he is gone, the music of Stevie Ray Vaughan Lives on. Jose Feliciano is one of the best Guitar players that has ever lived. His Guitar work on his vocal recordings is some of the best ever recorded. Though many young people have heard Doc Watson, I'm sure that many who know Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan have never heard of Doc Watson. And to those who have never heard the Guitar Work of Doc Watson, you are missing out on some of the best Guitar playing you can ever hear in this world. Some of Doc Watson best songs are 'Doc's Guitar' and 'Black Mountain Rag', and there are many more great Guitar instrumentals that Doc plays. On all of his vocal recordings, Doc Watson plays some of the best Guitar you will ever hear. Jerry Reed has an instrumental that is famous now, "The Claw." Jerry and Chet Atkins recorded many of the Guitar instrumentals that Jerry Reed wrote. You can hear the Guitar work of jerry and Chet in the albums, "Jerry and Me," and "Me and Jerry." Jerry Reed is one of the most creative of all Guitar instrumental writers. And his performance on pure Guitar, no singing, is outstanding. Jerry Reed's recording of "Alabama Jubilee," and his "Guitar Man," and all the "Smoky and the Bandit" Recordings have superb Guitar work by Jerry Reed. Of course everyone has their favorite Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan songs. Each Artist recorded some great Guitar work, as well as their vocal recordings.
