Apollo 13, once in grave danger, finally splashes down in Hawaii. President Nixon pinned medals of freedom on each of the three astronauts: James A Lovell, Fred Haise and John Swigert. Just days earlier, a power failure and ruptured oxygen tank crippled the capsule. NASA first learned of the problem with the words "Hey, we've got a problem here."

At the Academy of Country and Western Music's fifth annual awards dinner - Merle Haggard receives five awards including album of the year (Okie From Muskogee), single of the year and song of the year (same). Marty Robbins received a "man of the decade" award.
