FOO FIGHTERS INTERVIEW
Mr. Grohl's Wild Ride Dave Grohl should be nauseated by now. If his time behind the rock-and-roll traps for Nirvana didn't show him enough ups and downs, his roller-coaster ride as the leader of the Foo Fighters should have done the trick. Initially nothing more than a low-key outlet for Grohl's backlog of songs, the Foos quickly exploded into a good old-fashioned rock band, complete with personality conflicts, defections, and a celebrity rumor mill operating around it at full-tilt. Grohl formed the band with ex-Germs guitarist Pat Smear, ex-Sunny Day Real Estate bassist Nate Mendel, and once-and-future SDRE drummer William Goldsmith. Goldsmith departed -- apparently bitter that Grohl went back and redid most of his drum parts on the band's second album, The Color and the Shape -- and was replaced by Taylor Hawkins. Then Smear left, and was replaced by ex-Scream guitarist Franz Stahl, who lasted only about a year, before being replaced himself, following the recording of the band's latest album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, by ex-No Use for a Name guitarist Chris Shiflett. Beyond the ever-shifting lineup, Grohl has had to endure an endless barrage of probing questions on subjects ranging from the suicide of his former bandmate, Kurt Cobain, to the ins and outs of his love life. And every once in a while Courtney Love goes on TV to slag Grohl or the Foos just for good measure.
