CLASSIC ROCK HISTORY So, what happened last week in Classic Rock History?
from Classic Rock @ About.com June 12 - June 18 1964 - During their appearance on the show "Hollywood Palace," the Rolling Stones were taunted unmercifully by the show's host, Dean Martin. 1965 - The Kinks began their first U.S. tour. 1966 - The Beatles' Yesterday and Today album, featuring the original "butcher" cover, was released then quickly recalled so Capitol Records could replace the cover with something more conservative. 1967 - The Monterey Pop Festival was held in California, with over 50,000 in attendance to see Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Janis Joplin, the Byrds, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Buffalo Springfield. 1970 - Grand Funk Railroad spent $100,000 for a block-long billboard advertising their newest record "Closer To Home" in New York's Time Square. 1971 - The first Hard Rock Cafe opened, in London. 1972 - 300 ticketless fans crashed the gate at a Rolling Stones concert in Tuscon, Arizona. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. 1974 - Rare Earth drummer Peter Hoorelbeke was arrested after throwing his drumsticks into the crowd. 1981 - The No Nukes concert was held in New York City, with Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Graham Nash, Steven Stills and Linda Ronstadt rallying for nuclear disarmament.
