UNRELEASED HENDRIX BOX SET "Music is the most important thing. I'm thinking of my future. There has to be something new, and I want to be part of it. I want to lead an orchestra with excellent musicians. I want to play music which draws pictures of the world and its space. Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music." -Jimi Hendrix NEW 4-CD JIMI HENDRIX BOX SET, THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, TO BE RELEASED BY EXPERIENCE HENDRIX/MCA RECORDS RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 12, 2000 Career-Spanning Set Contains Over Four Hours Of Music Including 56 Rare and Previously Unreleased Studio And Live Recordings With the core essentials of Jimi Hendrix's extraordinary catalog now restored, Experience Hendrix/MCA Records is readying its most ambitious project to date: a comprehensive box set drawn from a wealth of previously unreleased or unavailable studio, live and home recordings. The lavish, purple velvet-covered box, titled The Jimi Hendrix Experience, contains over four hours of music and will be released in 4-CD and limited edition 8-LP boxes on September 12. Produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott, The Jimi Hendrix Experience details every significant chapter of the renowned guitarist's meteoric career. The set documents the birth of the Hendrix legend in Paris 1966, presenting unreleased live recordings from the Experience's fourth public appearance, continuing through Jimi's final sessions at his own Electric Lady Studios before his untimely death in September 1970 at the age of 27. The set includes an eighty-page, full-color booklet with an essay by noted music writer Dave Marsh and detailed track notes by Hendrix historian/author John McDermott, as well as several rare and never-before-published photographs by Linda McCartney, Jean Pierre Leloir, Karl Ferris and Dave Sygall and reproductions of Hendrix's handwritten lyrics. The Jimi Hendrix Experience draws upon alternate and dramatically different takes of such classics as "Purple Haze," "Little Wing," "Spanish Castle Magic," and "Freedom," coupled with newly discovered songs which have never before appeared on any Jimi Hendrix album. In addition to previously unreleased studio recordings, the box set presents some of Hendrix's finest live performances, including, from a 1967 Stockholm appearance, a rousing rendition of the Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band" and the live debut of "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp, "Rock Me Baby" and "Like A Rolling Stone" from the Experience's U.S. debut at 1967's Monterey International Pop Festival, and "All Along The Watchtower" and "In From The Storm" from Hendrix's celebrated headlining set at 1970's Isle Of Wight festival. "These live and studio recordings showcase Jimi's amazing growth as an innovative musician and composer," explains co-producer John McDermott. "As a huge fan myself, putting this set together renewed my enthusiasm for Jimi all over again. I hope Jimi's fans come away with a new appreciation for his remarkable talent." Rather than use the box set format to simply create a lavishly packaged greatest hits collection, one of the central themes behind The Jimi Hendrix Experience was to document Jimi's amazing growth as a musician and composer over the course of his brief, yet prolific, four-year career. This task was significantly aided by the number of newly uncovered tapes making their way back to the Hendrix family archive. "We kept finding stuff that was really good and putting it aside for the box," recalls Kramer. "I am extremely pleased with the music we have chosen. Jimi is at the top of his game throughout. It is a representation of how one can express one's self to the fullest, using every technique known to man and more. It's just stunning, that's all I can tell you!" The bulk of the studio work required for The Jimi Hendrix Experience was completed in 1999 and early 2000 at studios in New York and Los Angeles. In March 2000, mastering sessions for the box set took place once more at Sterling Sound with engineer George Marino. In keeping with all previous Experience Hendrix/MCA releases since 1997, The Jimi Hendrix Experience will also be released on vinyl as a limited edition, individually numbered, eight-LP set.
