GUITAR FESTIVAL
by Bill Dettmer

Frankston International Guitar Festival

"Been flat out here getting things ready for April 6, 7 and 8 2001..."

The Frankston International Guitar Festival will once again feature Workshops, Expo, The Guitar Makers Breakfast, Concerts, Australia's largest gathering of Ozzie Guitar makers, Free Pub Gigs, at least one Open Stage, Buskers and... The Young Guitarist Of The Year...

Application forms available now at the web site http://guitar.frankston.vic.gov.au/

Also this year we'll have the FIGJAM... a get together of some of the great players...and.... a FESTIVAL CLUB for people to gather after the shows, have a few drinks and enjoy more music into the wee small hours... plus more.

The main stage concerts at the Frankston Cultural Centre have already been lined up...

Friday will be the 'up close and personal' show with host Greg Champion chatting to - and playing with - David Wilcox(US), Rory McLeod(UK), Bruce Mathiske(Aus), incorporating concert performances by Bruce and David, plus a couple of others yet to be confirmed....

Saturday is 'the guitars behind the hits' opening with Country's Golden Guitarist Michael Fix and then the artistry of the band who've just toured with John Farnham... Stuart Fraser, Brett Garsed, Joe Creighton and Angus Birchall... who'll do their own thing first before bringing Ross Wilson and Daryl Braithwaite (and possibly another surprise guest or 2 ) out to join them for some more great music... this is going to be a hell of a show...

Sunday's early afternoon showcases the classical wizardry of Italy's Rosario De Marco followed by Argentinean Tango player extraordinaire Maximo Diego Pujol as part of his Australian Tour....

The Sunday twilight show, something special for Jazz/Fusion lovers, opens with Jim Kelly and D'volv and then Australian legends George Golla, Ian Date and Don Burrows with the one and only Martin Taylor(UK)....

And that's just the main stage...

There'll be at least 5 other stages running over the weekend and approx. 40 other artists/bands from around the country including the talents of.. Brett Wood, Jimi Hocking, Tim Gaze, Damon Davies, Glenn Brace, Salty Dog, Steve Tallis, Cheap Labour, The Brown Bros, Cold Shot, Rod Stone, Totally Gourdgeous.. plus..... ?

Some heavyweights of the industry are getting behind us for 2001. The Australian Guitar Magazine is supporting the FIGF solidly this year with a compilation CD of artists coming out with the January Edition. Some great ideas and contacts from Brett Kingman and Drago Trojkovic at CMI along with others in the guitar world.

So if you're into the guitar, no matter what style, if it involves the instrument that we all love, there's going to be a whole heap of fast fingers flying frantically over frets in Frankston in April..
