POLICE DOG BLUES

Blind Blake The Bluesman and "Police Dog Blues"
By Robert Lee Johnson

Blind Blake was quite the Bluesman and Finger Style Guitarist. He is one of the most imitated Guitarists that ever recorded.

Blind Blake has a unique Style that just grabs you and holds you. He does not have a bad voice either and can really put a song across. Blind Blake was one of the Truly Great Bluesmen who first recorded way back in the 20s. >From what I can see Blind Blake and Blind Lemmon Jefferson Recorded about the same time.

Many modern Blues Guitarist and singers know every lick that Blind Blake ever recorded. They have devoted themselves to learning his Guitar Licks, exactly as the Great Bluesman Played them.

I know a great Guitarists in St. Louis who goes by the Name of Tom Hall that is expert when it comes to playing the Blind Blake Blues Licks. When I first heard Tom Hall I had never heard of Blind Blake. But when Tom Played that Round Neck National Guitar I heard some music that was great. And Tom Hall Could play the Great Blues Licks all night long. I immediately became a Tom Hall Fan.

A few years later I was working in A Collectible Records Shop which had a few thousand 78RPM Records from the Old Days. Jean Haffner, the founder and owner of the Record Exchange in St. Louis let these gems go for one dollar each. Jean had an old 78RPM Record Player so I listened to the one Blind Blake record I found, Man it was great.

Years later I was on MP3 COM, in the Acoustic Blues Genre, when I saw a recording of the "Police Dog Blues." I downloaded and listened. There on the Recording were the Exact Same Guitar Licks that Tom Hall had played the first time I saw him. And this MP3 COM artist had some other Great Blues Songs that were high on the Acoustic Blues Charts at that time. His recordings stayed high on the MP3 COM Acoustic Blues Top 40 Charts for a very long time because his Blues were very well played on the Guitar, and his Blues Singing is Quite Good. Later on I acquired access to many Blind Blake Recordings. I heard Tom Hall Playing Guitar, as I was listening to the many Blind Blake Recordings. Then I discovered that many of the modern Blues Players, who for the most part play locally, all knew the Blind Blake Licks. Well there is little wonder that so many fine Blues Guitarists learn the Guitar Licks of Blind Blake, he was nothing short of being Great.

Many Recordings have been made of this song, by some of the Greatest Blues Players. I did a search on "Police Dog Blues" on CDNow and came up with all these CDs that have Artists who have recorded the song.

CDNow is the only Web Site Selling CDs that I know of where you can search on a song.

Though I never imitate, I have been strongly influenced by many of the Old Blues Players. I used to practice playing Slide Dobro with many of the Great Slide Blues Players. Many Saturday Nights I have spent playing my Dobro to the Great Blues songs that were played by DJ Leroy Pierson, in St. Louis, on the Missouri University FM-Station KWMU. And this practice must have done some good for I got a number one in Acoustic Blues on MP3 COM: Resonator Blue #2, and the song was in the Top 10 of MP3 COM Acoustic Blues for 5 months.
