SEVEN STRING GUY by Guy Pople, our 7 String Guy... Greetings all... 1) Just a few more bits about PC recording. It occured to me that there is a wide selection of shareware/freeware at http://www.Hitsquad.com including multitracking programs & plugins. I use Cakewalk Guitar Tracks because it was cheap (£50) and is dedicated to recording guitars (without the all the midi stuff to complicate things). The mp3 converter CDEX is freeware that should come up in a standard search. 2) I have been road-testing Fingerweights for the past 2 weeks. These are plastic rings with nuggets fitted to provide weight/resistence as you practice. They are pretty uncomfortable & unwieldy to begin with, but this has worn off as I have become more accustomed to their feel. They are proving quite effective , especially for Hammer-on/ pull-off exersizes, arpeggio and scale work. Also, in order to get the most from them, it is necessary to play with all of your fingers over the board so that the plastic doesnt clash with the strings (it will probably be some time before I notice any strengthening effects but I am confident that they will pay off)... anything that can potentially improve performance and develop good technique has got to be a worthwhile investment. If you have got some spare cash, contact ageller@fingerweight.com for more info. 3) A word of advice. Just because you may have an extra string, it doesnt mean you have to use it... Quality over quantity. If you use the extended range of your axe tastefully then you will avoid overdoing things and thereby remain on peaceful terms with your bassist... 4) Check out these half-whole diminished scales..
5) Recommended listening: "Time" by Joe Satriani, the prelude to "Sorrow"
