VOODOO CHILD
Jimi Hendrix Collection
More than 30 years after Jimi Hendrix's death, his works still inspire great interest. We get another chance to check out the Hendrix phenomenon this month, with multimedia events, TV programs, and releases that re-examine his musical legacy. On May 8, UTV Records and Experience Hendrix released Voodoo Child: The Jimi Hendrix Collection. This is a two-disc compilation of old favorites, alternate song takes, and live material. The disc includes tracks from Hendrix's three original studio albums and last fall's four-disc box set, as well as a smorgasbord of live performances and covers. Included are a rendition of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," a previously unreleased version of "Foxy Lady," and two tracks last seen on the B-side of a 1970 single. Packaged with a 20-page booklet of photos and facts, the set will also feature an essay by MTV News' Kurt Loder. Punk rock motormouth Henry Rollins will appear in TV ads for the album. On May 20, VH1 will debut a new Legends program dedicated to Hendrix. The artist's official Web site, www.jimihendrix.com, will relaunch soon afterward, and the redesign will boast such new interactive features as streaming audio and video, and a searchable Hendrix encyclopedia. Finally, Hendrix's Red House Interactive Museum -- a traveling exhibit of Hendrix's guitars, clothing, and memorabilia -- will go on the road this summer. Among its scheduled stops are the Blues Foundation's annual W.C. Handy Awards in Memphis (May 24-27) and Milwaukee's Summerfest (June 29-July 8).
