SEVEN STRING GUY Dealing with the Bassist My outfit recently took possession of a proficient Bassist. After a few rehearsals it became obvious to me that my lines were cutting deep into his territory and were preventing the dude from expressing himself. I decided that the Bass player was more valuable to the outfit than my precious 7 string-enhanced lines and decided to begin the awkward business of trimming off any notes that obscured the new Bassists lines. I here the cries of 'Sacriledge'. I have now come to the conclusion that the 7strings bass-end role in this type of format should be limited to times when the actual Bassist decides to make forays into the guitars territory- in effect when you and the Bassist decide to switch roles. The net result will be a more streamlined sound and improved morale. Of course you might have a very understanding Bassist who doesn't mind you invading his/her space or maybe you prefer to remain a solo artist... |
