AX FACTS & STATS

AX FACTS & STATS: Paul Gilbert

Another Exclusive Interview/questionaire type thingie by Dave Roberts for Extremeguitars.com!

Welcome to the first of, what I hope becomes a long list of Extremeguitar.com segment guitarist quizzes I like to call "AX Facts & Stats". In this segment, A variety of guitarists from every musical genre will be asked to fill out a short answer, fill-in-the-blank questionnaire that asks everything from guitar tech questions to general fun questions. I will basically keep the same questionnaire questions for all guitarists involved but may throw a "curve-ball" question in at times. For extremeguitars.com's inaugural edition of "AX Facts & Stats", I am proud to bring to you, one of my own personal favorite guitarists; Paul Gilbert (damn... I just gave away the first answer.... sorry). -Dave Roberts

My guitar influences growing up were: The Beatles, The Osmond Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, my uncle Jimi Kidd, Rush, Pat Travers, old Def Leppard, Robin Trower, U.F.O., AC/DC, Journey, Aerosmith, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, KISS, Cheap Trick, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, etc.

The guitars I use are: Ibanez PGM models.

The strings and tunings I use are: Ernie Ball RPS strings. 9-42. Everything is tuned down a whole step.

My current rig setup consists of: Ibanez PGM800 guitar

DiMarzio cables
Laney GH100L 100w head
Laney 2x12 cabinet
ADA Flanger
Fulltone Deja-vibe
MXR Phase 90
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay

The greatest invention for guitars is Beatles songs and Van Halen solos.

My normal songwriting process I've got a $50 radio shack portable cassette recorder. I record all my small "inspirations" and then jam with a drummer to work the ideas into bigger parts. A lot of inspiration also comes from having deadlines from the record company.

My favorite Paul Gilbert solo is "Bliss" on my new CD "Burning Organ".

My favorite Paul Gilbert song is "My Religion" from "Burning Organ".

My Career highlight is A guitar clinic I did in the middle of Taiwan. I can't even remember the name of the city. I just had a REALLY GOOD night. Also, the last solo show I did in Osaka Japan on the Alligator Farm tour was great. And playing for 100,000 people in Brazil with Mr. Big was awesome. And the third show I did was Racer X in the 80's was great.

My most embarrassing moment on stage Getting a drill caught in my hair in front of 15,000 people in Atlanta, GA.

The one piece of my gear that I can not live without is A pick! My fingerpicking isn't very good.

The first song I mastered on guitar "It Don't Come Easy" by Ringo Starr.

My first guitar was A "Stella" acoustic.

The one thing most fans don't know about me is I've been very inspired by Ayn Rand's novels and philosophy. I'm a closet "Objectivist".

The best advise I could give beginning guitarists Learn songs and play them in a band, or at least with a drummer. Don't get a perm.

The CD(s) I'm listening to right now A Paul McCartney tribute CD. The band "Virgos" does an awesome version of "Maybe I'm Amazed".

My 3 all-time favorite albums
A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles
Help - The Beatles
Van Halen II - Van Halen

I'm a sucker For girls in knee-high boots.

My favorite junk food "Sharks" fruit snack.

My biggest pet peeve My vocal range.

The word or catch phrase i say way to much is: Awesome. Cool. Absolutely.

The hardest part of my job is: Hearing loss.

I knew I hit the "big time" When I couldn't fit my gold-plated limosine into the loading bay of my private jet because there were too many girls with knee-high boots in the way.

The worst job I ever had My last year of high school. It was a lot of work and I didn't get paid anything.

Right after this interview I'm going Finish writing my monthly column for a Japanese rock magazine.

My greatest obsession: Finding good food daily

My first band was Paradise. I was 11.

My next move is Moving my studio to L.A.!

The greatest contribution guitars have brought into my life is EVERYTHING.

The coolest toy I had growing up was A Sears stamped-aluminum guitar with a battery-powered cardboard amp that was "plugged in" with a piece of yarn with a big black suction cup on the end.

Check out my website at www.paulgilbert.com

If I could have three wishes, they would be:
1. Go back in time and see The Beatles live.
2. Go back in time and tell myself not to get a perm.
3. Have a child who invents cold fusion.

I couldn't imagine being on the road without: Crazy clothes.

If I wasn't doing the musician thing, I could really see myself working as: A chef.

My favorite movie ever. Amadeus, Spinal Tap, Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

My mission in life is: Make lots of good albums, live well.

EG.com: Thank you so much Mr. Paul Gilbert for being a part of Extremeguitars.com's "AX Facts & Stats". I wish you the best with your "Burning Organ".... release and continued success! By the way Paul, what's with the "Burning Organ" title?

PG: The CD cover has a photo of me playing a organ that is on fire. It's my revenge against all the horrible organ music that used to blast out of the organ stores that were in all the shopping malls when I was a kid.

PG: There's a second meaning as well, but you'll just have to guess.

EG.com: Ouch! Well anyway, Thanks again for spending some time with Extremeguitars.com and me, and for all of our readers; make sure you check out Pauls website at WWW.PaulGilbert.com and go out and buy Paul Gilbert's new release, "Burning Organ". Be sure to check back for the next installment of ExtremeGuitars.com's "AX Facts & Stats" coming soon!
