KIRK'S COLUMN
The I-IV-V chords and the modes within. One of the most asked questions and most difficult to explain is the "modes" question. What exactly are they, how do you use them and how do you keep track of them? I'll try again to shed some light on this topic. I've used the 3 major chords from the key of A for this demo. They are the I, IV and V chords, pronounced the "one, four and five chords". Any musician who has been around for a while will instantly know what that means. It means that out of the 7 chords that arise naturally from the major scale, these are the first, fourth and fifth in the series ... in other words A, D and E in this example in the key of A. You'll see how the modes are built into the key itself. Continue lesson here: http://planetalk.thatllteachyou.com/145chords/ More articles and lessons like this at http://www.guitarticles.com
