WHAT'S HOT WITH JAZZ GUITAR
by Doc Dosco

This week we feature the extremely accomplished and well traveled jazz guitarist Garrison Fewell.

Online Bio:

Garrison's debut recording, "A Blue Deeper Than the Blue" on Accurate Records brought him recognition as one of the freshest guitar voices emerging in the 1990's, won him the 1993 Boston Music Award for Best Jazz Album of the Year, and a place in the Top Ten Records of the Year by United Press International and Coda Magazine Critic's Choice.

Guitar Player Magazine highly praised Garrison's performance: "Garrison Fewell's dusky archtop tone and probing bop lines evoke the spirit of 50's and 60's jazz heavies. Pat Martino's adventurous melodies, Kenny Burrell's unhurried swing, and Jim Hall's pensive harmonies echo within Fewell's laid-back playing. He's got a mature, lived-in sound that's simulataneously cerebral and blue."

Wired Magazine described Garrison, "His beautiful tone and effortless, fluid lines draw the listener in as only a select few have done. A fine guitarist who appeals on the sublime, emotional level of a Bill Evans or a Jim Hall."

A four-star review in Downbeat, and solid radio airplay on New York City's public jazz station, WBGO, led to playing jazz clubs in the city, with several appearances at the Blue Note Jazz Club.

Although a surprise to critics and fans in the U.S., Garrison was no new-comer to the jazz scene. Having led his own jazz group since 1976, his experience included playing with guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist Buster Williams and pianist Herbie Hancock.

Following Dizzy Gillespie's observation that "Jazz was born in America, but Europeans discovered it first!", Garrison headed off to play in Marseille, France for the summer of 1983. With a taste of the "good jazz life", he was hooked, and continued touring extensively throughout Europe becoming known in the hipper jazz circles from Amsterdam and Paris, to Brussels and Milan. From his travels, Garrison speaks both French and Italian fluently.
