Tellef Ogrim, a fretless guitar player from Oslo, Norway has just launched a web site putting online monthly updated MP3 recordings of his electric fretless guitar improvisations played on a modified Yamaha SG600.

"I bought the guitar back in the early 1980-ties in order to use it in a rock band I had just joined. After a Fender replaced the Yamaha as my favourite instrument, the Yamaha sat in my basement for a couple of years until the idea of trying to make a fretless guitar out of it struck me. What I then did was simply to hammer out the frets, fill the gaps with wood repair paste, turn of the front microphone and plug the guitar into the Marshall I used back then (before my back started protesting carrying the big cabinet around)."

Since then the guitar has been used for as well rock and jazz purposes. At www.tellefogrim.no, Ogrim concentrates on free improvisation pieces recorded in his own home and uploaded to the internet via his broadband net access.

"To me this project is both about playing the fretless guitar more - because it simply is the most expressional instrument I ever played - and about communicating music on the net. I am a net enthusiast, and I believe that the net will be the next big arena for musical communication. Today, most musical sites are established in order to market music made primarily for other channels. Of course, there is nothing wrong in making PR for your new CD by giving away small clips of your music on the web, but the big change will come when music at a large scale is made with publication on the web in mind.
