KIRK'S COLUMN Happy Easter, all. I've had a little movie loaded up at my site for quite a while now, demonstrating some improvisation over a chord progression which keeps moving in and out of the key. It's based on an old jazz tune, and because most of the chords are 'outside' chords, you must rely on something other than muscle-memory scales to improvise over it ... if your brain is anything like mine, that is. I never could turn scales into melody, but I discovered decades ago how to turn chords into melody. I've had a few requests to provide more info on how this is done, so I put together a new lesson. Go to the lesson at http://planetalk.thatllteachyou.com/positions/ There are more lessons at my other site http://www.guitarforbeginners.com and a new forum where you can ask questions ... well worth checking out, if I do say so myself. All the best, and remember to take that guitar OUT of its case, and keep it handy. Cases are for transportation, but once you're home, a guitar stand is the go. If you're anything like me, a beautiful guitar (and they're all beautiful) on display is just begging to be twanged, and the more you play, the better you get. It's as simple as that.
