KIRK'S COLUMN Hello yet again, fellow guitar enthusiasts. I've posted a new movie/tab/midi lesson for you to get your fingers and brain around. This week I chose a great chord progression, one of the first I ever learned way back in the mid 60's. It's The House of the Rising Sun, and I've done a finger style rendition of it. This sequence of chords still has the same scary sounding vibe as it did when I first heard it, and I've included an interesting open voicing for the F chord, so that you don't need to get stuck on that barre that so many find impossible to finger properly. Go to http://guitarforbeginners.com and you'll see the weekly lesson link half way down the page. In other news, my book PlaneTalk continues to go out to the World at an ever increasing rate, revealing to thousands of twangers the simple visualization trick to seeing how Music displays itself the length of the fretboard. Here is a recent letter I received: "Kirk, thanks for the method of improvising - works well after years of trying to unsuccessfully learn arpeggio patterns. I am amazed at the simplicity and elegance of your approach. My musical potential has now been upgraded by your method." (Ray A., from Australia) The Spanish version will be available soon, thanks to Graham Russell, an Englishman living in Spain who liked the book so much he offered to translate into Spanish. There is a new lesson at the book site http://planetalk.thatllteachyou.com also; I call this one "Melody Mapping", for reasons which will become obvious. Click on the Weekly Lesson link, upper right hand corner of the page. Finally, if you live in Sydney Australia, my old band The Train is playing one final show at The Bridge Hotel, Rozelle, as a kind of send off for me, as I'm moving to Canada for a year next month. That's Friday night, may 7th. All the best for now, |
