THEY WERE THE EGG MEN Australian federal politician Bob Katter admitted recently to throwing eggs, tomatoes and toilet paper at The Beatles during their 1964 tour of Australia. About 8,000 fans greeted The Beatles in Brisbane, as well a group of haters, including Katter. "A bloke called Dave Beattie - a prominent accountant now - was on my shoulders and ... everyone let fly with the eggs," Mr Katter said. "[The Beatles'] truck sped up and they were hiding behind the piano as all these eggs splatered everywhere. "The police got me and ran me away and they thought it was screamingly funny. They let me go and both burst out laughing." But the incident seemingly worried The Beatles, who used a local newspaper to call for the egg men to come forward. Katter's group turned up and one member challenged the band to a fight. "One of our blokes - a bloke called Peter McHugh, another prominent barrister these days - he shaped up and said 'you want a blue, we'll give you a blue alright'," Mr Katter said. --- Lennon later said: "Let's get the whole thing straight. There were exactly six eggs, two tomatoes and a head of lettuce. They were thrown by a group of university fellows and we met them all later. They said they were idealists and they were very stupid idealists because they had no ideals. And they said they didn't like us because we were materialists, which we are. Anyway, we shook hands and laughed at it and convinced them that they were materialists, too, and they went away. But when I read about it in the newspapers the next day, I thought we'd been battered."
