KIRK'S COLUMN

Phoney Flamenco

Hello again, fellow twanger. I trust you're keeping those fingers nimble and calluses crisp. Remember, guitar cases are for transporting your instrument, not for home storage. Buy a stand, they're only 12.95 or so, and keep your guitar out and within reach. Some of the best practice you can do is mindless noodling in front of the TV in the evening. Don't worry about the rest of the family. They understand.

This week is a quick look at a little Flamenco-ish phrase. Like all riffs/licks/phrases, this one follows a simple Am to Dm to E7 chord progression. By follow, I mean it uses notes from those three chords. Those chords are the I-IV and V chords of the key of Am, so there's nothing new there. I-IV-V is universal, no matter whether it's major, minor, classical, rock, blues or Flamenco ... those chords underpin just about every piece of music ever written.

Go to http://www.guitarforbeginners.com and go through the routine which you must have down pat by now.

Don't forget, you can get 34 lessons like the one you're about to see on a CD, from my other site http://planetalk.thatllteachyou.com ... they're a little more advanced, perhaps. Also included on the CD are 24 of my tunes in Mp3 format. Good value by any standard. You can also read up on my book PlaneTalk, which sells at an ever increasing rate, revealing the 'trick' to putting it all together on the fretboard to thousands of twangers around the World. Here is a recent testimonial:

"Been playing bass and guitar for three years and plateau-ed. Thanks to your book, I am able to actually see the fretboard instead of fumbling. For some reason 500-plus dollars of guitar lessons couldn't teach me that. Go figure. Thanks for opening my eyes." From Jonathan F in Reno, Nevada.

Also, check out a little movie of some dropped D slide guitar at http://www.bottleneckguitar.com. I'm about to plunge into my next video, Slide Guitar in Standard and Dropped D Tuning. I was practicing pushing all the buttons and playing ... at the same time. I'll be loco by the time I'm done, but what a nice way to go!

All the best, until next week,

Kirk
