KIRK'S COLUMN

Hello again, fellow fan of the twang. I trust you've been keeping your finger tips crisp and nimble.

I've done a new finger style lesson for you, this time of that classic Beatles tune 'Here comes the Sun'. It's a great one to get your fingers around, especially that bit where the time signature switches from 4/4 to 3/8. It's such a clever, ear-catching, memorable chunk of music. No wonder it has lasted through the decades.

Go to http://www.guitarforbeginners.com and follow the Weekly Lesson link, then negotiate the speedbump. You must be getting pretty good at it by now.

http://planetalk.thatllteachyou.com is another site of mine that features a bunch of free lessons like these. They are a little more advanced, and often about slide guitar, and well worth a look.

While you're there, you can read up on my book 'PlaneTalk - The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book', which goes out to the World at an alarming rate, revealing to twangers everywhere a very simple but all powerful way to look at the fretboard. It comes with the Guitar Slide Rule, which crystallizes the technique graphically, and it's guaranteed to change the way you look at your fingerboard for ever more. As David from Perth Australia recently wrote:

"Hi Kirk, after having played chords on a six-string for a number of years, I recently discovered the joy of playing a 4-string bass guitar. I've been teaching myself and picking up stuff from bass sites on the net, but the PlaneTalk Guitar book is still THE source book for all my musical know-how. Thanks Kirk, it's excellent."

Thank you, David.

If you're one of those who has a firm grasp of the basics but is still wondering what the trick is to having the whole fretboard at your disposal, what the trick is to being able to improvise over any progression, what the trick is to being able to invent a part on the fly ... do yourself a favor. I spent decades searching for that 'trick'. You can learn it today. Check it out at http://planetalk.thatllteachyou.com

If you have a slide guitar site, you can join the Slide Guitar Web Ring at http://www.bottleneckguitar.com, guaranteed to bring you traffic. You can also join the forum there, which is finally taking off. We need more members!

If you're wondering what kind of music I play, there are a few tracks loaded up at http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/kirklorangemusic.htm. Drop me a line on my message board if you like 'em. If you don't, don't worry about it.

All the best, until next time,

Kirk
