KIRK'S COLUMN Polk Salad Pickin' Hello once again, fellow picker. This week's movie/tab/midi lesson looks at a familiar sounding 'feel', namely that swampy down-on-the-bayou vibe that was made famous by Tony Joe White and Creedence Clearwater. It's a combination of tempo, chord structure and attack, all based around the 12 bar blues progression. I've kept it as basic as possible, but of course, you can add to it or subtract from it ... there are no strict rules to follow. The main thing is to keep the musical flow happening. Go to http://www.guitarforbeginners.com and follow the Weekly Lesson link. You will have to negotiate the small speed-bump I put in the way, as usual. My book 'PlaneTalk - The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book' continues to teach to thousands of discouraged twangers the simple visualization 'trick' that turns the whole fretboard into familiar, friendly territory. If you're one of those who still feel daunted by anything above the fourth or fifth fret, who can't seem to turn scales and modes into music, who only knows a couple versions of any given chord, then drop in for a visit. Find out how an old veteran player like me, with 44 years of playing under my strap, perceives the fretboard. You'll be amazed at how simple it is. Go to http://www.thatllteachyou.com where you can read about it and take advantage of the many free movie/midi/tab lessons there also. If you play slide guitar, why not drop into my other site http://www.bottleneckguitar.com and join the forum. That's it for this week, all the best, |
