KIRK'S COLUMN

Hello again, twang fan.

As promised last week, for that one guy left on the planet, I've done a 'Stairway to Heaven' lesson. He need not feel silly on his next visit to the music shop. To tell the truth, I was not a fan of LZ when they came out with this, way back then. Even though I've heard it a million times since, I don't think I ever played it until this week. The lesson, as always, consists of a movie of me playing it, tablature, midi and a written, chord by chord, commentary.

I liked it so much, once I put the lesson together, I did a quick electric slide version, in standard tuning. There's a very lo-res movie there of that too.

Go to http://www.guitarforbeginners.com and follow the Weekly Lesson link, negotiate the dreaded voting speedbump, and get into it. The second half will come next week.

There are several 'Slide in Dropped D/Standard' lessons at http://www.thatllteachyou.com and you can also find out about my book PlaneTalk while you're there. It's not about planes, it's about the 'trick' to negotiating the fretboard. All guitarists quickly realize that there must be an easy way to look at the fretboard, some kind of imaginary pattern that keeps all music on track. How else could those amazing players do it? How do they know where everything is? There must be a trick to it. PlaneTalk is about that trick. http://www.thatllteachyou.com is where to check it out.

My tune Strom a Comin is still top 5 at Soundclick.com, in the 'Blues General' chart. Have a listen for me, willya? I've put 'Jailhouse Blues' up for you this week, a low-down electric slide 12 bar blues. Go to http://www.soundclick.com/pro/default.cfm?BandID=156391 You can download it for free.

OK, until next week,

Kirk
