WHAT'S HOT WITH JAZZ GUITAR by Doc Dosco http://www.docdosco.com This week I managed to catch a couple of superb guitarists at this years NAMM show in Anaheim, California. First, I heard Sid Jacobs at the Hofner Kiosk (Sid endorses Hofner Guitars). Sid never ceases to amaze. His single line playing is extraordinary. He also plays magnificent solo guitar and performed a number of his transcriptions of Bill Evans tunes. See Sid's website at http://www.sidjacobs.com. Next, I caught Jimmy Bruno. Jimmy (known as the Paginini of the guitar) is a wonderful player with prodigious technique. He play blisteringly fast lines with ease. He was joined by Mundell Lowe, the elder statesman of the jazz guitar here in the US. Jimmy and Mundell played a ballad together. Jimmy's website is at http://www.jimmybruno.com. Mundell Lowe is at http://mundelllowe.com/. I also ran into a very tired Larry Coryell. (towards the end of the NAMM show, most everyone is frazzled) I had spent some time with him and did a column on him last NAMM show. He is still associated with Cort guitars, as they make his signature model. He doesn't have a website online at present but we hope to see one soon. After walking through what seemed to be miles and miles of exhibits containing guitars, keyboards, basses, drums, computer music gear, and other instruments of every conceivable size and shape, I was dog tired myself. However it was certainly a day well spent.... Doc Dosco is a jazz guitarist, composer and audio consultant living in Los Angeles, CA. His website is located at http://www.docdosco.com, where you can find more information on the 'What's Hot with Jazz Guitar' columns, audio clips of Doc's playing, and many additional features. Doc endorse Heritage Guitars and is a featured artist on their website. He also endorses the new Pignose Valve Tube Amps -- great for jazz (and anything else!) |
