KIRK'S COLUMN

Kirk's weekly guitar lesson

Hi all, I'm back with the second half of that piece of music that has lasted through five centuries. We're doing our bit to keep it alive and well by learning it and playing it. It's a beautiful thing.

I also touch on the subject of 'dynamics'. Dynamics, when talking about music, can be seen as the interplay of light and shade; speed up and slow down; soft caress or hard attack; ringing and muted ... these are the subtle elements that turn a bunch of notes into Music. A friend and associate of mine once suggested that music is affected by gravity. Silly as that may sound, I know what he means. I like to see 'dynamics' as the art of playing along to gravity

Kirk's Weekly Online Guitar Lesson is where to go. You'll see the link on the home page and you'll notice a slight change in format.

PlaneTalk - The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book continues to amaze and astound with its simple fretboard de-coding 'trick'. It's hard for some to believe that such a simple twist on such a well known guitar landmark can turn the maze of fretboard positions into familiar, friendly territory ... but they do. As Shannon, a recent customer, wrote at the private PlaneTalkers' Forum:

I just purchased the PDF/DVD combo and read through the book this weekend. Kirk, I've got to say, what a great approach and "crash course" in music theory and fretboard navigation. I cut out a few copies of the slide rule and put them in my guitar cases for easy reference when practicing, etc. I'm still trying to wrap my head around applying your technique to my playing and break habits I've been in for a long time (blues boxes, etc), but I just wanted to say thanks. Best $50 I've spent on instructional material, ever!

Why wait? If you're still wondering what that last piece of the puzzle is that allows some of us to 'see' every fragment of music at any given moment, you're ready to read PlaneTalk.

I recently did a home recording of a very old tune called Misty. It was more of an experiment really, to get the hang of recording, but I liked the final result and loaded it up at Soundclick.com. To my delight it went to #1 in the "Jazz General" charts. And I'm not even a jazz player! Have a listen here. It's an electric slide guitar version. here is the chart, I'm not sure if I'm still at the top.

My site BottleneckGuitar.com is where to go to join the Slide Guitar Forum, if slide is of any interest to you. It's certainly my favorite way of playing. If you're really into slide, and you have a slide guitar site, you can join the Slide Guitar Web Ring, a good way to drive targeted traffic to your site.

That's about it for this week,

Kirk
