KIRK'S COLUMN Kirk's weekly guitar lesson This week's movie/tab/midi lessons looks at a Ragtime feel piece, loosely based on Jimmy Buffet's 'Pencil Thin Moustache'. He certainly didn't come up with the progression though, or even the approach; this is kind of the 'default' picking progression for hundreds of other tunes and only the details vary for each. Thanks Tom, from the GfB Forum, for suggesting it! Kirk's Weekly Online Guitar Lesson is where to go. You'll see the link on the home page. By the way, the Guitar for Beginners and Beyond Forum is a great place to ask any questions you may have about playing the guitar. I'm always there to answer them, as are many other experienced players. PlaneTalk - The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book continues to elicit superlative feedback. Michael K wrote me this week after downloading the pdf of the book and receiving the companion DVD. Here's how he put it: " Kirk, I received, last night, my copy of the DVD you produced to accompany your PlaneTalk book. Having spent nearly two decades searching for an effective guide through the wilderness that is the guitar's fretboard, I can honestly say that your technique is nothing short of brilliant. For the first time, I now find myself within striking distance of breaking free from the tyranny of boxed scale patterns and, by extension, being able to truly improvise. Thank you for sharing your remarkable insight." You too can learn about this ridiculously simple way of looking at the fretboard, a visualization 'trick' based on something you learned the very first day you started playing, by visiting the site. As simple as it is, it is that last piece of the puzzle you need to truly see the entire fretboard as familiar, friendly, logical territory. You'll finally know what it is that allows some players access to every last scrap of music for any given moment. My slide guitar track is still #1 in the "Jazz General" charts at Soundclick.com. Have a listen here. My site BottleneckGuitar.com is where to go to join the Slide Guitar Forum, if slide is of any interest to you. It's certainly my favorite way of playing. If you're really into slide, and you have a slide guitar site, you can join the Slide Guitar Web Ring, a good way to drive targeted traffic to your site. That's about it for this week, Kirk
