KIRK'S COLUMN

Hi again, fellow picker.

I had the pleasure of seeing an old friend last night, an amazing player of all things strung. His name is David Lindley and he first came to notice as Jackson Browne's slide player. I met and became friends with him in Australia when he was touring with Ry Cooder in 1978 and haven't seen him since, so it was great to see his show in Bellingham Washington and chat about old times later on. He is the master and he had the adoring audience eating out of his hand with his quirky tunes and banter.

This week's movie/tab/midi lessons looks at an early Elvis tune, a beautiful piece that, when played finger style, almost takes on a classical feel. There is a wonderful section where the melody holds one note, the bass line descends and a middle line goes up in semitones ... all at the same time. A feast for the ears, and not difficult to get your fingers around.

Kirk's Weekly Online Guitar Lesson is where to go. You'll see the link on the home page.

By the way, the Guitar for Beginners and Beyond Forum is a great place to ask any questions you may have about playing the guitar. I'm always there to answer them, as are many other experienced players.

PlaneTalk - The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book continues to 'turn the light on' for players who have reached the wall: if you fall into the category of players who know the basics, can play chords, know scales and modes, understand the workings of music, can play memorized licks, solos and riffs ... but are dying to know how it is that some players can invent on the spot something different every time they play and use the whole fretboard like it's friendly familiar territory ... drop in and find out about the simple 'trick' to doing just that. There are several free lessons there as well.

My slide guitar track is still #1 in the "Jazz General" charts at Soundclick.com. Have a listen here.

My site BottleneckGuitar.com is where to go to join the Slide Guitar Forum, if slide is of any interest to you. It's certainly my favorite way of playing. If you're really into slide, and you have a slide guitar site, you can join the Slide Guitar Web Ring, a good way to drive targeted traffic to your site.

That's about it for this week,

Kirk
