Guitar Newsletter #1 - 19 August 1998

Return to Main Newsletter Page   |   Browse Newsletter Archive

Hi there & welcome to the first Guitar Newsletter! from the Webmaster of "1000 Great Guitar Sites on the Web".

As a visitor to the site, you already know that it aims to showcase the best that the Web has to offer to those interested in the guitar. This newsletter is an extension to that, aiming to review sites and products in an attempt to save your time surfing, letting you know what's new on the site & what's hot on the Net! Entries will be kept short, with references to URLs for further reading, rather that full text articles.

If you want to include your own brief article (250 words max.) for the next newsletter, just email me. Only entries deemed to be of great interest to the readers will be enclosed, though (tips, tricks, reviews) - I don't want to bore readers with a deluge of advertising or unwarranted self-promotion.

In this edition:

W H A T ' S N E W  at the "Great Guitar Site"

1 - TUNING

One of the hardest thing for beginners is tuning your guitar. There is a lot of advice out there about the best method, I leave that up to you to decide, according to your needs and resources. Some good places to start looking can be found on the revamped Guitar Tuning page

The Guitar Forum at Harmony Central is a good place to find out info, too. For example, in response to a query: "Why alternate tunings?" was posted this reply: "To allow certain tones to ring as open strings, while you play fretted notes up the neck. Also to allow a chord to be played with a slide across 1 fret. Some people use unusual tunings as a creative tool when songwriting, to suggest new sounds and avoid guitar cliches. These tunings can be used to bring jazz tonalities to a folk style of playing (Joni Mitchell for example)"

2 - TABLATURE

WANTED !!! ............. Original TABS to add to the modest archive developing on this site! Mail me with any you're happy to have hosted here on "1000 Great Guitar Sites"... My Web space is limited, so do you want the obscure or popular? See what's there now at the TAB Archive

Tablature is the most popular section of the site, by far! One recent addition of note is "FEEDBACK - A 'New Wave' in Guitar Tabs - free guitar tab e-zine sent right to your e-mail box". You can request tabs, but what you're sent doesn't directly correlate with your request, so you may not get what you want - interesting idea, though, check it out

And for bass, I've added a link to The Bass Space. It "contains up to date news, links, tab, sights, sounds and lessons for the bass guitar. Over 2000 tabs & it only started August 8!

A final word on tabs… if you're still wondering why so many tab links no longer work, we've got the Harry Fox Agency to thank! As you probably know by now, their legal action against OLGA forced its closure. Read more here

3 - SEARCH

The main "1000 Great Guitar Sites" site is now searchable - there's a search slot at the bottom of each page. When you get to a page, you then need to use the "Find" option in your browser (Ctrl & F keys), to find where on the page your query is listed. The 1998 Guitar Database is not yet searchable, but will be soon!

4 - BANDS / ARTISTS

Like your band site listed (signed or unsigned)? Just submit your site to the 1998 Guitar Database

Fans of Yngwie Malmsteen will find audio clips, album reviews & links on the revamped Yngwie page . For those who like a laugh, checkout the Yngwie joke on the jokes page

If Clapton is more your style, checkout the Eric Clapton page. I can recommend his latest album, Pilgrim. If you buy the CD from this URL, you get a discounted price and I get 5% commission, which helps support this newsletter & the guitar site!

5 - Discounted CDs at CD NOW

I get 5% commission (at no cost to you) on any CD sale through my site, which helps support this newsletter & the guitar site & database. Just search from this link CD NOW. As well as quick delivery of thousands of CDs in stock, they've got sound clips, reviews & other merchandise.

More recent releases I'd recommend, currently all at * 30% OFF * are:

other CDs can be found on the CD page

6 - GEAR

From Crysta's Top NAMM Picks:

"The American Showster Company had some very interesting guitars. Shaped like a Harley Davidson gas tank and the side of a '57 Chevy--named the "Icepick" and "HotRod", respectively - this company went away from the standard shapes. While playing one of the Harleys, I found the action and playability to be very low and fast. For guitarists who are tired of seeing their guitar on the cover of every magazine and want something that no one else has, check these guys out at www.showster.com. Retail on their instruments are between $599.00 and $749.00"

7 - SOFTWARE

Cakewalk Announces New Software Package for Guitarists

Cakewalk is well known for their sequencing and digital audio software, but they are now hard at work on Guitar Studio(TM), a version designed specifically for guitar players. Guitar Studio offers 8 tracks of digital audio, MIDI tracks, effects processing, and a virtual fretboard that displays fingering information while a song is being played. It should be available in the Fall, with tablature support to be added shortly after that
