3 - WANT TO LEARN CHORDS WITHOUT READING MUSIC?
From: E. Gustafson rgustfsn@bratshb.uwc.eduRick
I stress to my students the importance of knowing as many chords and
their inversions as possible. I believe that knowing the harmonic layout of
the fingerboard helps one learn and understand guitar music faster and more
comprehensively.
Many of my university guitar students (I am the ad hoc instructor for the
University of Wisconsin - Sheboygan) are rock guitarists who can't read
music. Many are fine players who learned by ear. While they can play, they
just don't know what quite what it is they are playing.
For example, they may refer to chords as "grunge," "squash," or perhaps
"the Hendrix chord" as the kinds of chords they play. When I explain that
the "Hendrix" chord is really a "7 sharp 9" chord (ex. Purple Haze E7#9),
they are somewhat astonished that there is a name associated with the chord.
For my students who want to learn to chords, but not learn to read notes, I
have them do the following...

4 - TAYLOR GUITAR
From: "C.B. Dunn" dunn0130@tc.umn.edu
I have a Taylor 514ce. It came with light gauge strings, however I am
interested in putting mediums on it. Are there any issues I need to be
aware of? Do you know of anyone that might have more information on
changing string gauge. I don't want to damage my new guitar.

5 - SLAYER

Official Web site for Slayer's American/Columbia Records new release,
Diabolus In Musica
Slayer makes music from mayhem...
When he talks about death, murder and war -- and most other things on the
creepy side of life -- Jeff Hanneman speaks with the good-natured vibe of a
man who loves what he does for a living. And why shouldn't he? He and his
fellow co-workers have been at it for the last 15 years. However, despite
what some people might think, Hanneman and the other members of the band
Slayer do not actually live a life of human sacrifice and goat worship.
They just like to sing about it ...
continued
Official Slayer Direct Store
...and from SLAYER Showcase on iMusic:
It's been three years since Slayer last dropped a ton of original decibels
on its faithful minions, three years since the world's most grisly band
terrorized rock & roll with its patented growl and seething thrash.
Following a change of labels, Araya, Hanneman, King, and Bostaph--names
that will live in infamy on the Devil's shortlist of gnarly superstars --
are back with DIABOLUS INMUSICA, their Americai/Columbia debut, another
ballcrushing blast of confrontational uber-noise. And so at last begins the
next scene in the theater of hate that is Slayer. more...

8 - JACI VELASQUEZ
Only two short years ago, an unknown 16 year-old, soon-to-be-Phenom,
exploded in the world of Christian music. With the release of her debut
album, Heavenly Place, Velasquez quickly became a fixture on the charts,
graced the pages and covers of national magazines and was a constant winner
in a multitude of award polls and shows. She now holds the distinction of
being the fastest selling debut solo artist in the history of Christian
music. Her debut album shot five singles to the number one position, landed
Jaci Velasquez the prestigious Dove Award for New Artist of the Year and
was recently certified gold, signifying sales over half a million copies.
Not a bad start for any new artist.

10a - CHOOSING THE RIGHT TEACHER by Mark Stefani/Vision Music
1) Have you ever taken a private music lesson?
2) Have you ever been "burned" by a poor instructor?
3) Are you looking for a teacher for yourself or your child?
4) Do you find yourself sceptical or afraid of being ripped off?
If you answered yes to one or more of the above questions, then I highly
recommend that you check out the following article
You'll find great tips and logical steps that will help you find the
"right" connection, and avoid the pain associated with the "wrong" one.
I've had both over the years, and know that the former can be a priceless
experience, while the latter can be devastating! (Do I see some heads
nodding?;-)

10b - ROBBIE LAWS ("Takin' the Night Train")
Know the name? If you've never heard this electrifying blues guitarist
(and vocalist) from the Pacific Northwest, you're in for a rare treat. I
grew up on the music of blues traditionalists Albert King, Buddy Guy,
B.B. King, Albert Collins, etc., and the "blue side" of rock and jazz
(i.e. Hendrix, SRV, Ford, Carlton, etc), but this rising star sounds like
any one of them on a very "good" night. His new CD "Takin' the Night
Train" is the BEST blues guitar recording that I've heard in at least ten
years!
