3 - THE TROUBLE WITH TAB

I wasn't aware of the huge volume of tablature for guitar out there until I joined the Internet. I'm amazed at all the work going on. Commendable.

The trouble with TAB of course (and to a lesser degree conventional notation), is that it teaches specific tunes, but nothing about music. It tells you where to put your fingers but not why. To me, the why is far more important.

If you know the why, you know all the wheres.

By the 'why' I mean the context. Music as I 'see' it, is a multilayered system following strict mathematical rules. Cold and boring, I know, but that's the bottom line. Thank goodness you don't see music, you hear it. To me, the context boils down to the sonic relationship of notes and chords within whatever key. As my last article urges, get to know your keys. TAB is great for scrutinizing a piece of music in detail, (provided of course that the author has got it right), but always look at the detail against the bigger picture -- the context.

Once you understand how the chromatic scale allows for major scales which gives rise to chords which can be broken back down to melody and harmony, and see where to put it all on the fretboard, you won't need TAB. You won't want to repeat someone else's finger movements. You'll have your own.

4 - HOW TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE FOR FREE

After creating your site, don't forget to let the world know! Add your URL (Website address) to the Search Engines (FREE) At Vicnet you'll find a list of Search Engines. Just look for a small text link on each site that says "Add URL", "submit site" "add me" or something like that.

Alternatively, you can use a free multi-listing service such as selfpromotion.com to do it for you.

You really only need to list with the major ones: AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, InfoSeek, LookSmart, Lycos, Northern Light, Yahoo

The <HEAD> section of your Webpages should have a good descriptive <TITLE>
and use <META TAGS> to add a content description & keywords for the Search Engine to index.

If you view the source code of the 1000 Great Guitar Sites pages you'll see how its done.

6 - PICKUP INSTALLATION ON A TELE

Does any one have plans for pickup installation on a tele. Im moding it from a 2 singlecoil to a humbucker/single(bridge). I've done it but I have a bad grounding and phasereversal problem,reversing the leads on the single isn't working. HELP PLEASE!!!!

7 - TUNING

The last newsletter had an article on using a high e string for the third string and tuning it up to g.

Here's a comment in reply from Don Alfieri

This is a variation of Nashville tuning which uses all octave strings for the wound strings, i.e. a twelve string tuning without the bass strings. This set-up produces a novel rhythm guitar sound with or without a second normal rhythm guitar.

9 - PLAY SEXY!

Many of today's young guitarists look at guitar playing like a kind of sport. If you train long enough and know the right tricks, you can make it to the top. But what is there to gain? One thing is for sure: There will always be someone who plays slower than you, and someone that plays faster. If not today, then tomorrow.

Half of the audience is female. Most of them don't get turned on by someone who performs guitar-aerobic. Rather think of yourself as a singer than a guitar player. Treat each single note with love, and it will turn into a powerful tool. There are a million ways to play a single note. Play with that note. Feel the string and your fingers on it. Touch your guitar like a lady. Make her moan. Start to feel good.

Nothing to prove. Forget about all your scales. Start to listen to this moment - it's the only one that exists.

Relax..... and suddenly you have something to say. Talk to your audience with your guitar. Address each single note and you will feel the response immediately. Play sensually! Watch the girls. You can see it in their eyes..

If you look in this direction, you will be able to develop your own, unique, personal tone. It takes time and more courage than to perform some speed licks, but it's worth it. And you will be miles ahead of the Armada of Malmsteen and Satriani clones.

A good way to learn how to make your guitar speak, is to play the vocal part of a song. Take i.e Aretha Franklin's "I say a little prayer" (or any other love song) and play the vocal part on the guitar. Now, that you have no words, you have to add all those little nuances that gives each note a vocal-like quality.

At first it may sound stupid, and you realize, how simple good melodies can be. Now it's up to you, the artist, to fill them with meaning and expression. That's when noise turns into music.

One tip that my teacher had his students do & that I still use is to not use the word "nervous" at all. If someone asks how I am feeling the day of a performance, I say "excited". If you think about it, it is the same exact emotion. Giving is a positive name instead of a negative one helps me channel it in the right direction.

You might think, "it doesn't matter what I call it, I still feel nervous", but actually I have found the less you use the word, the less 'nervous' you really do feel. I have also seen the exact opposite with people who constantly say "I'm so nervous" or "I hope I don't get nervous" the day of a gig. Guess what, they usually feel very nervous when they perform!
