2 - THE THREE FLAVORS OF MUSIC
From: Kirk Lorange
Merry Christmas everybody, Happy New Year.
Here is one more for '98...
When I started playing the guitar, it seemed to me there were hundreds if not thousands of 'types' of music. The idea of being able to improvise over all these styles seemed daunting to say the least. I'd have my work cut out for me, learning all rules that would apply.
Seems silly, thinking back. I wish someone had told me then that there are only three to worry about.
Here's how I see it now.
There are three flavours of Music: Major, minor and the other.
Major: National anthems, traditional folk, classical music written in a major key, a lot of pop songs, most country music, Christmas carols and children's songs etc. If you were to improvise over or accompany tunes like these, you would probably encounter Major 7's and Sus 4's, you would be thinking major scale.
Minor: anything written in minor key. There are a few 'sub-flavors', but nothing to worry about. If improvising or accompanying, you would be thinking minor.
The other: Rock'n'roll, the blues, jazz, funk, R and B, soul music, gospel, the other pop songs, in other words, modern (western) music. This kind of music lives between major and minor. If you were to improvise over or accompany this music, you would be thinking both. Even though playing in a 'major' key, you would be borrowing the minor third to use in your runs, and the minor seventh, a very influential note in this genre. You would avoid the major seven. It is this double identity which makes it so interesting. This flavor was taboo in the old days (apparently), forbidden, a real no-no with roots in hell. Now it's the backbone of the music industry.
And that's it -- no big deal, just three easily identifiable flavors.
Happy holidays - K i r k

3 - THE LEGEND, JOHN FOGERTY
at Melbourne Park 18th November, 1998
Review by Rod Callaghan
The first time I heard the bull frog calling my name was back in 1968, I was still in secondary school and the sounds of Creedence Clearwater Revival where sounding across the airwaves. Their sound was new yet familiar, addictive and powerful, rock blues and country all rolled into one creating what some called a swamp sound. At the very heart of CCR was the musical talents and genius of John Fogerty, the bands singer, lead guitarist and song writer. Johns vocals are awesomely distinctive, at times rough as a gravel road, at others howling like a Missisippi hoo doo man , and at others calm like a backwater swamp, but always distinctive. His guitar playing is just as distinctive as his vocals he is a true legend of the guitar and if anyone deserves a place in the all time greats hall of fame, a person we call a legend then that man is John Fogerty...

4 - DAVEY JOHNSTONE & JOHN JORGENSON INTERVIEW...
Unplugged & Unpredictable
What do the guitarists in Elton Johns band do between gigs when they are traveling the world playing to sold out stadiums of screaming fans? In the case of longtime bandleader and sometimes songwriter (I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues)Davey Johnstone, and more recent additional axe master extraordinaire (three time winner of CMA's guitarist of the year with The Desert Rose Band, and accolades too many to mention with The Hellecasters) John Jorgenson, you borrow a
minidisc recorder from Sony Electronics and write and record an all acoustic instrumental guitar duo CD called "Groovemasters Vol. 2...Crop Circles".

6 - FANTASY FRETS........
Hi, it's the two naughty students from London again. This page is all about guitars, covering all types of music from cock-rock to pyschedelia. We're not going to get all technical on you but expect tabs, pics, features and humour.
Now we get right to the heart of the crucial matters by asking the big one:
Big ROCK hairdos: good or bad??? .....
Rock = leather trousers ,
Rock = men with guitars in leather trousers,
Rock = Men with long hair and guitars in leather trousers
It's a simple formula that hasn't been messed with: until now that is. Now even Metallica, the gods of HM, are sporting smart new crops.
So is this the end for 'big hair' as we know it?
Well, if we're going to look at the medical evidence, the answers pretty conclusive:
Not only does it take three years to to attain the "big rock hair" look, you can expect to lose 70-100 hairs a day! On top of this the essential facts remain:
Its still possible to have short hair and look hard (Rollins, Pantera)
Long hair is strictly for roadies
The seventies are over!
So in conclusion:
Its time to get the shears out and lose that mullet!!!
Anyone who has anything to add to the debate should e-mail Rishi or Atul
