TIP #1
Does your electric guitar's tremolo arm have the "jitters"? Doesn't stay where you put it, and flops around? There are two solutions. One is to remove it, and throw it away. But probably a better alternative is to use a
tiny, stiff spring that Fender includes on all American strats. Your local Fender dealer can get these for you (get a couple, they bolt for the door when you're not looking).
Note: This works with any vintage-style tremolo, but not with Floyd Rose or Kahler, etc.
TIP #2
Remember how bright, shiny and smooth your frets used to be? They can be again, by following these simple instructions. Next time you change your strings, have the following items on hand.
1) Masking tape
2) Steel wool, fine grade"0000"
3) Of course, strings.....
Once your strings are removed, carefully place strips of masking tape on either side of the first fret on your guitar. Rub the "0000" steel wool across the fret 5-6 times, and it will remove all the tarnish and crud, leaving behind a shiny and smooth fret. It doesn't take much pressure. Remember, you're only polishing, you're not trying to file or change the profile of the frets.
You can use the same pieces of masking tape as you move up the neck, taking care each time to cover the fingerboard, so you're only "wooling" the fretwire, and not rub the steel wool on the fingerboard. When you're done, your guitar will look better, feel better, and play better!
Important!...On an electric guitar, be sure to totally cover and seal off the pickup area, as the magnetic pull will attract all those microscopic shreds of steel wool., giving your pickups the "fuzzies". As easy way to cover the pickups is to lay a piece of newspaper over the body of the
guitar, and use masking tape to seal it shut where the neck and body join, and a bit to the left and right as well.

Once you are done cleaning the fretboard with the steel wool, you should use a drop of lemon oil (I use Old English) on each fret to protect the wood and to keep it from cracking, because it is possible to get cracks in the frets if you don't protect the finish.

4 - PLANE TALK
From: Kirk Lorange
Read all of Kirk's great Newsletter Articles
My aim in all my articles is to de-mystify music and the guitar for those who are still confused by it all. Both are huge subjects -- I've been working on them for 38 years and still feel I've only just scratched the surface, but I have earned a living from playing for 32 years, so I guess I'm doing something right.
As we net surfers know, there are thousands of sites offering tuition and advice. As the author of an instruction book myself, I'm always curious to see how the courses are set out. More often than not, I find myself trying to decipher notation, which I'm sorry to say, I never studied properly, and I usually wind up confused about something I know to be pretty straight forward. All detail, no over view.
I know for a fact that there are far more players out there who don't read notation than do -- players who have mastered the basics of the guitar for no other reason than they love it --players who have learned what they know by ear and are hungry for more knowledge. It is for them that I write these articles and that I wrote Plane Talk. I'm sure there are schooled guitarists out there who must shudder when they read some of my views on how to approach playing, but I'm not writing for them. I'm writing for those who play from the heart and not from the head. Tough gig but somebody's got to do it.
Best wishes from Tamborine Mountain.

13 - MORE DISTRIBUTION ADVICE
from Tonya Rae
Promoting your CD to radio takes a lot of organization and time management. The first step you will need to do is find radio stations that are willing to accept submissions from indie artists. Always get permission ahead of time, before you submit your music. There are two easy ways to find radio station information. The first is to go onto the WWW and search the radio station databases available. This method is free, but will take some time.
The best resources I have found are, "MIT Radio Stations on the Web" and "BRS Radio Stations". Most sites list the stations by genre (style of music), state, etc. This will help you find radio stations in your region if you decide you are going locally at first (which is a good recommendation if you do not have a lot of money to spend, and you aren't worried about charting), or if you are going nationally (which is only a good idea if you are already established locally and are seeking national exposure and a chance to chart) more...
Here are a couple of good web site addresses: MIT and BRS

14 - THE MELODIC MINOR SCALE AND THE DOMINANT SEVENTH FLAT9
(V7b9) CHORD
by Greg McNair of the Netherlands
The melodic minor scale is a handy scale to have in one's sonic repertoire. It not only contains information relevant to minor chords, but it is also useful for a variety of other chords, amongst them the dominant seventh flat 9 (V7b9) chord. In the jazz world, the melodic minor scale is mostly used to express the sound of the dominant seventh sharp 5 flat 9 (V7#5b9) or, as it is referred to by its other name the ALTERED (V7/alt.) chord.
Coincidentally, in Europe where I studied jazz guitar, the V7#5b9 chord is known as the V7b13b9 chord for reasons of resolution. That's another story, however, and maybe I'll get into that at sometime in the future.
When I was studying, it took me quite a while to really comprehend the V7b9 chord, its use and its relationship to the diminished chord.
Right now, I want to explain how the sound of the V7b9 chord traditionally is expressed and how I use the melodic minor scale to express that sound.
Let's use G7b9 as an example.
G7b9 contains the root (g), the major third (b), the perfect fifth
(d), the dominant seventh (f) and the flatted 9 (a-flat). G7b9 contains 4 diminished chords:
B diminished
D diminished
F diminished
Ab diminished.
These 4 chords are symmetrical. This means that they all have the same notes. B,D,F and Ab diminished all contain the notes b,d,f and a-flat. You can also look at these chords as being a ROOTLESS G7b9 chord. This means that b,d,f and a-flat are all G7b9 chords without the root, G. (Man, I hope that you're all still with me.)
Traditionally, in order to improvise over the G7b9 chord, one uses the DIMINISHED SCALE... continued...
