All-Music Guide Bio:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/x.exe?p=amg&sql=B4906
Excerpt:
Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s, responsible for bringing the music back to earth. Instead of playing the usual rock star games of metal stars of the early '80s, the band looked and talked like they were from the street. Metallica expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions.
The release of 1983's Kill 'Em All marked the beginning of the legitimization of heavy metal's underground, bringing new complexity and depth to thrash metal. Metallica completely crossed over into the mainstream with 1991's "Metallica", a Number One album that sold over seven million copies in the U.S. alone. The band launched a long, long tour which kept them on the road for nearly two years.
By the '90s, Metallica had changed the rules for all heavy metal bands; they were the leaders of the genre, respected not only by headbangers, but by mainstream record buyers and critics. No other heavy metal band has ever been able to pull off such a trick.
The band then decided to move toward alternative rock in terms of image - they cut their hair & released "Load". Although the album was a hit upon its summer release -- entering the charts at number one and selling three million copies within two months -- certain members of their audience complained about the shift in image...

6 - HARRY SMITH - CALL UP - NEW CD
http://www.powerup.com.au/~musicman
Go on, be the first kid on the block with a
Harry Smith CD...
The media has compared this music to that of Dylan, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lynyrd Skynryd, Billy Idol, Don Williams, Tom Petty, The Angels...
...the Website has nine music clips from the CD, plus chords and lyrics to all 23 songs. Have a listen, read some lyrics, make your own mind up...
Personally, I can't stop playing this Rock/Blues/Ballads trilogy CD! It rocks from the first track: "You and Me". This track has classic rock riffs, big sound, raunchy beat, but contrasting coy lyrics: a cute love song about all the exciting things Harry would like to do with his girl...
"We could be together for the longest time
We could be so happy if you were mine..."
The CD is professional but still fresh - not overly polished. The raw energy & enthusiasm show from someone who's been around a while, but isn't compromised by fulfilling onerous recording contracts. 23 tracks, over 70 minutes of music and no "fillers" - you'll play it again & again...

8 - BASS TUITION
"The Bass Player" site at http://www.bassplay.com/
has great free bass tuition lessons - you can even download them! It starts with the basics:
The strings of a bass are tuned to produce the 4 notes E, A, D, and G (from thickest string to thinnest). Thus, if you play an E on the piano, and the open E string on your bass, you'll get the same note (if you choose the right octave on the piano, that is). Moving up one fret on the string produces the next highest note. That is, the open A string produces an A note (hence the name). Fingered at the first fret, it produces an A sharp, or B flat. Second fret produces a B. Third fret produces C (since there is no black key above B), fourth fret C sharp, and fifth fret produces D, the same note as the open D-string. And so on up the fingerboard. With this knowledge, you should be able to find two or three versions of each note on your bass. For example, you can get an F at the 1st fret of the E string, at the 3rd fret of the D string, at the 8th fret of the A string, and at the 10th fret of the G string...
