2a - BANDS / ARTISTS - Leighton Watts

Leighton Watts is a singer, songwriter, bush poet and humorist from Australia. He left for the US in 1993. "I spent much of my life in the bush and it is a big part of me. I've done a little of everything ... herding sheep and cattle, fencing, kangaroo culling ... " He has produced six albums of his own songs, a book of newsletters describing his "terminal case of itchy feet" and a volume of his own poetry. His music is played in over 20 countries as well as the US. www.LeightonBWatts.com   or Review

2b - BANDS / ARTISTS - Lanny Cordola

Fans of Lanny Cordola can subscribe to his email Newsletter by contacting Dan: dan@pioneer-net.com

Here's a sample of what you will get:

"Have you ever noticed how good Lanny is at song endings? You know how most artist's songs just kind of fade out, or else they end awkwardly? That's because they either don't care about the ending, or they can't come up with one. (I remember listening to one of Ted Nugent's earlier albums and realizing that every song ended exactly the same - with a wild rave up crescendo!) Well, Lanny's songs have great endings, some of the most creative I've ever heard! Very rarely does a song just fade out. Take a listen and see if you don't agree."
Dan Smith, Sitekeeper

2c - BANDS / ARTISTS - Terry Kath

After hearing Chicago in 1968 at the Whisky A Go-Go in Los Angeles, Hendrix told Chicago saxophone player Walter Parazaider "Your guitar player is better than me". Who was he? Terry Kath

2d - BANDS / ARTISTS - Phil Keaggy

"He has over 30 releases, played on hundreds of sessions and is highly regarded not only as a top notch musician and humble guy, but also as a respected man of God. Who is this guy? Phil Keaggy. You are asking yourself again, "Who??" Chances are, unless you have been listening to Contemporary Christian Music you have never even heard the name. He has been voted top fingerstyle guitar player in Guitar Player Magazine and recently won the Instrumentalist of the year Award in Nashville along with numerous other highly regarded awards" article by Mikey www.concentric.net/~Mikekeo/

3a - GETTING GEAR OUTSIDE USA

And on the topic of Gear Search, I see from the list of email addresses that many of you are not fortunate enough to live in the States, where you are spoilt for choice. Indeed, I live in Australia, where many items have to be ordered from overseas and paid for in US dollars. I received this email from Argentina:

"My name is Juan. I want to buy a Fender Telecaster American Standard B -Bender, Can you help me? In my country this kind of instrument does not exist and I don't know how much etc... I would like to learn more about this Telecaster" sampa@sion.com.ar

I referred him to this article, that may be of interest to others: From: stringbender.com Mail: info@stringbender.com

3b - STRINGBENDERS

"Gene Parsons made the first StringBender for Clarence White in 1967. For almost thirty years Gene Parsons has been installing StringBenders forgreat guitarists like Albert Lee, Pete Townsend, Jimmy Page, Bob Warford, Ron Wood, and Bernie Leadon. Now that Fender's American Standard B-Bender is available at any Fender dealer, and now that the new Acoustic StringBender is ready, Gene Parsons and the StringBender Custom Shop can once again provide personalized service to professional guitarists.

You can send a Telecaster, a Les Paul, or an acoustic flat-top guitar to Gene at the StringBender Custom Shop have him install your StringBender. Gene has also installed custom-made StringBenders in all kinds of instruments from twelve-string Telecasters and Bajo sextos to banjos and mandolins. Tell us about your wildest musical dreams and we will make them come true for you" http://www.stringbender.com/custom/

How did I find it? Just search AltaVista: fender telecaster american standard "b-bender"

4 - Guitar and Effects Construction/Modification

If you're like me and can't resist pulling guitars apart and modifying them, or want to know just how to maintain or fix your own guitar, then stop by OzRock Online Guitar Centre. I'll show you the basic principles for building and modifying guitars. I've also got a few custom wiring diagrams and ideas which basically anyone can do with a little care and patience.

For those of you a little more technically minded, there's also sections on building your own effects units. There also links to other sites with effects schematics. I'll take you through the principles of electronics and construction with some specific advice related to effects units.

It's a free site with a lot more information available about amplifiers, tab, software, music themes and bands. If you've got a question about custom wiring or want advice, I'm more than happy to answer. Stop by here

5a - CLASSICAL GUITAR MAILING LIST

Looking for more classical guitar-related email? You'll get more than you can handle by subscribing to the list at: cguitar-list-request@eskimo.com or the digest: cguitar-digest-request@eskimo.com

Such as: "My teacher has compiled a bunch of links to freeware, shareware and low cost programs for editing guitar music and posted them on his Website The Old Pueblo Guitar Co. www.opgc.com"

*********************************************

Here's an excerpt from a recent digest about

5b - CLASSICAL GUITAR and sheet music:

The Guitar Houston society's web site has a links page to several classical guitar sites: www.neosoft.com/~guitar/gslinks.htm

The sheet music I've found is in several formats:

  1. GIF files. Print out using software such as PolyView (shareware) www.polybytes.com Usually low quality print.

  2. PS (post script) files. Print out using software such as Ghost Script (freeware) www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost

  3. PDF (Adobe Acrobat) files. Print out using free Adobe Acrobat reader   free from Adobe's web site

  4. MIDI (sound) files. Windows will play the sound files. You can also import the MIDI file to most music notation packages, arrange it, and print it. I hear that Finale is the best, but it's expensive. Lime is a shareware program you can download. There are lots of inexpensive software programs that can also do the job. Most classical MIDI files are pieces that were not written for guitar, e.g. Vivaldi & Beethoven, but with patience and hard work you can make your own arrangements.

There are links to 2 MIDI sites on the Guitar Houston page, where you can hear the pieces. There's not much in the way of tablature; mostly standard notation.

7 - SEARCHING

Look at the search page for a full range of guitar/music searching options

But now for a sneak preview of a search on the 1000 entries in the 1998 Guitar Database... go here

This URL isn't being promoted widely yet because it is still in testing phase - your feedback appreciated. Sorry, the dargo/cf server is in a long process of being upgraded, so it's not always available, but, hey, where else can I get free space on a database server? (Currently Cold Fusion running on NT).

Searching the database can't be done by a regular search engine because the content is generated dynamically by running queries on the database using Cold Fusion - search engines can only index static pages. The obvious faults are that results are in alpha order, not relevancy order. Also, ALL matches for the query are listed (I'll get it limited to 20 per page soon as I've had time to work out & write the code). Another thing, it looks for exact matches, treating everything you enter as a phrase, not a string of AND entries, so only type a word or two. Anyway, try it out & let me know what you think .

8 - FINALLY

Remember to checkout what's new on the "1000 Great Guitar Sites" each day

As a visitor to the site, you already know that it aims to showcase the best that the Web has to offer to those interested in the guitar. This newsletter is an extension to that, aiming to review sites and products in an attempt to save your time surfing, letting you know what is new on the site & what is hot on the Net! Entries will be kept short, with references to URLs for further reading, rather that full text articles.

If you want to include your own brief article (250 words max.) for the next newsletter, just mail me. Only entries deemed to be of great interest to the readers will be enclosed, though (humour, tips, tricks, reviews) - I do not want to bore readers with a deluge of advertising or unwarranted self-promotion.

Your email address will not be disclosed to others at any time.
If you wish to leave the list just email with unsubscribe in the body,
plus your reason, if you wish to share it with me!
Constructive criticism, feedback & requests are always appreciated
