2 – HANK WILLIAMS

How about the complete Hank Williams CD Box set?
Don’t know Hank, the Country Music Legend of the 50’s?
Hank Williams is the father of contemporary country music. Williams was a superstar by the age of 25; he was dead at the age of 29. In those four short years, he established the rules for all the country performers that followed him and, in the process, much of popular music. Williams wrote a body of songs that became popular classics, and his direct, emotional lyrics and vocals became the standard for most popular performers. Hank lived a life as troubled and reckless as that depicted in his songs.

5 - A GUITAR GAME   *** PRIZE-WINNING ENTRY ***

by Alessandro De Sanctis
This is a game I'm used to teaching to my students to find all chords they need. This game is based over the simple observation of tuning interval of our guitars:
This is the normal tuning:
Intervals (half steps)
e 5 (from B to E)
B 4 (from G to B)
G 5 (from D to G)
D 5 (form A to D)
A 5 (from E to A)
E
As you can see intervals are all the same, with the exception of G-B.
The second property is that the first and the sixth string have the same
starting note so they can be played in the same way.
We can use this property for our game.

9 - DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION
(from LA Music Talks, Sept 25)

I am an A&R person for Nordic Records, a division of Nordic
Entertainment Worldwide. This is just an open invitation
for songwriters and bands/artists to get aboard with our
company while the getting is still free. We have pioneered
the world's first downloadable music system, and are able
to create a web presence (approx. 3 page layout) and handle
the distribution arrangements for our artists'. What makes
us a little different is that we promote, offer audio
samples, and SELL the music over the net. Instantly. Well,
depending on the length of songs and drive space at the
musics' final destination.

50-50 royalties after sale. Nothing ever comes out of the
Artists' / Bands pocket. We get paid to sell your music.
That simple.

10 - CHOOSING A GUITAR

From: Keith G. Struck
To: cguitar-digest cguitar-list@eskimo.com

I am in the process of choosing a new guitar. I too am now playing on an
old Goya ('75 vintage) and found that this old friend had wonderful
sound compared to guitars many times it's value. Make no mistake, this
is a cheap guitar made popular by Julie Andrews in 'The Sound of Music".
But, having said this, the maker had the right recipe to produce a great
sounding instrument.

In my search I have found that many retailers have private playing rooms
and will let you play as long as you want. You can also check out their
return policies and purchase the guitar with the option to return it if
it is not to your liking. In this regard, make darn sure that you are up
front with the retailer that you are checking the guitar out and the
possibility is high that it will be back in their store soon.

Taking a guitar home gives you the opportunity to play it in YOUR
natural surroundings with accoustics that you are used to. I am doing
this now with an Esteve 1GR08. It sounded great in the store, I brought
it home, tuned it properly and low and behold... no sustain. Loud voice,
clear notes, no sustain. The ambient noises in the guitar shop
(humidifier) masked this. I will be returning it tomorrow for a full refund.

11 - "COACH'S CORNER" ("Sharing the Knowledge")

"Coach's Corner is a series of informative, high-impact articles, based
on 26 years of devoted teaching and observation, designed to motivate and
inspire other musicians to greater heights. It took over two years to
write this 24-piece collection, covering a broad range of topics, and
they are now ALL online and available to both students and visitors"

12 - PAY-TO-PLAY
(from LA Music Talks, Sept 25)

Low pay, no-pay, and pay-to-play are not just LA/Seattle
phenomenon, but seem to be occurring all over--in
particular wherever music industry A&R can be found (or
where bands think they can be found). This has been
accompanied by the phenomenon of declining wages in
recording: even on those ever-diminishing dates that are
filed through the union, wages on records with budgets of
less than $90,000 were cut in half last year nationally
(see the "AFM Low-Budget Recording Agreement").

Pay-to-play has been slower to arrive in New York, thanks
to a Local 802 union action that shut down the club Trax in
the mid 80's. Additionally, musician-friendly club owners
kept the idea of decent pay alive through the last decade.
Unfortunately, the trend is gaining ground in the 90s.

A bunch of us have recently gotten sick of this situation
and formed the Noise Action Coalition. We believe that when
money is being made or when corporate interests are
involved, musicians should be paid. We've demonstrated and
picketed in NYC at the CMJ Music Festival and at the no-pay
club Arlene Grocery. We recently negotiated a major pay
increase for musicians in the Knitting Factory Texaco Jazz
Festival.

We are both union and nonunion musicians, and we've so far
navigated the difficult course of getting the union to help
us out (for example by letting us use their lawyer so we
don't get sued for our leaflets) without their insisting on
any immediate quid pro quo in terms of new members, and
without being swallowed up by their agenda (which in some
cases has nothing to do with what new music/indie musicians
want).

We'd be happy to share details of what we've been up to
with like-minded musicians.

Sincerely,
Anita Culp
Acting Secretary
Noise Action Coalition

13 - PORTUGUESE GUITAR HISTORY

Etymologically, the Portuguese word "Guitarra" comes from the Greek "Kythara", later converted by the latins into Cithara. The legend tells us that this name comes from Cyterón, a mountain somewhere between Boeotia and Attica. Not everyone agrees, however: some believe that this word comes from "Cythara", the ancient name of the Greek island of Cerigo, believed to be a paradise of poetry and love, where a temple to Venus layed... continued
