QUIET RIOT: The Randy Rhoads Years

A review by DB Roberts (as featured in June issue of CC6string's Guitar Resource Magazine) members.aol.com/cc6string

Recently I had the rare opportunity to purchase the 1993 Rhino Release, QUIET RIOT: The Randy Rhoads Years. This release features many early recordings from the popular heavy metal headbangers, Quiet Riot, featuring the outstanding fretwork of their first lead guitarist, the late, great Randy Rhoads who is most remembered for his extraordinary guitar and songwriting talent displayed briefly with Ozzy Osborne in the early 1980s just prior to his untimely death resulting from a freak accident as an airplane crashed into the tour bus Rhoads was in.

I had always been a fan of Quiet Riot and Randy Rhoads and even more-so now! This release is a must have if you are a Randy Rhoads fan, Quiet Riot fan, Guitar fan or rarities collector!

Personally, I find this album reminiscent of Spinal tap, featuring many tracks of widely diverse natures from various aspects and phases originating from Quiet Riots bar-band days continuing throughout their early Japan Sony Releases. The diversity is present throughout this whole album from their trademark metal tunes through their brief "pop" phase and all the way back to the mid 1970s with their Alice Cooper-esque type songs. Despite wide assortment of varied riff and chord progression styles on the release, Randy's awesome guitar virtuosity is ever-present on each and every track, especially his 7 minute shred-fest solo appearing on "Laughing gas" which includes pieces of the solo that later becomes "Dee" and other tracks that evolved into his Ozzy Osborne days.

Although this release is hard to find, I do know that they frequently appear on online auctions and currently there are two more of these unopened cassettes up for auction (starting price $6.00 at the time of this article) that will remain on the auction block until June 28th.
